I’ve taken my 2016 OR with 58k miles to the dealer for oil changes and plan to start doing my own soon. Yesterday I got a call that I needed a new steering rack as they saw a leak during the oil change but the truck needed no power steering fluid. I fluid film my truck frame and I am fairly certain they saw the fluid film that got on the boots and considered it a leak. Just passing this on in case anyone else may encounter a similar situation. Going to monitor power steering fluid the next 6 weeks and see how it goes.

Poke the steering rack boots and see if any fluid comes out.

Well done taking to dealer for oil changes
When you start DIY, enjoy Happy Surprise of finding your bellypan bolts stripped from The People Who "Worked On It" Before You

I have a riddle for you
If the steering is a closed system
and your fluid level is within spec
    Do you have a leak?
    The answer: No

    Bonus question
You have a jug of Vitamin D Milk
guy tells you it's leaked out half gone
but it's brand new bought yesterday never opened
milk all the way to the top
    jug is dry. No holes.
    Is there a leak?
    (I don't expect an answer. It's a hard question)

    Tomorrow you get a call
saying you need to put $100 in my PayPal
    What Will You Do
    Please Say Yes You Will

Fluid film and power steering fluid are different colours so it should be easy to tell.

Potentially a couple oz. if fluid can leak and the reservoir level still be "in spec" as you say. If the seals are just weeping under the boots the dealer may consider that a leak worth fixing because it's potentially a safety issue and will only get worse over time.

Also, you should work on your analogies.

Some people are not capable of doing their own maintenance for multitudes of reasons ie; living arrangements, physical abilities, no knowledge, just don’t want to do it, etc.. it’s their vehicle and not your business.

Bashing someone to this ridiculous degree with terrible analogies is uncalled for. Sounds like you need a hug. Hopefully your weekend gets a little brighter for ya.

I’m pretty much done with Toyota/Lexus service departments. We have owned Toyota’s since the 90’s and it has been a constant battle. For some reason I thought Lexus would be better. Nope.

This is my 50K mile transmission fluid I changed out this week.
In reality, this is my 130k mile transmission fluid. I paid for the service, just didn’t receive the service.

It will be a miracle if this trans makes it to 180k miles.

Now that your warranty is off....... Any fluid seep is now considered a leak by the dealer ha ha .

Real talk right there. Comical thread...ripped the front end out from under my Honda Civic this weekend but I'm not much for messing with my Tacoma yet. Only so much time I'm willing to spend wrenching my vehicles without a garage.

Agreed they are no better but they have an awesome customer lounge. Atleast mine did. After a shit experience at my local Lexus dealership and after I sold said Lexus back to them I spent the following few months stopping by and grazing there stocked fridge and continental spread they always had out. Maybe that’s stealing but they stole plenty from me. No regrets!

That sucks, I seen some unnecessary service recommended, but it was done. I hate the mileage recommendations, the writers seem to go by savvier operating conditions.
