Country shut-down last year. Rental fleets sitting idle so rental companies sold-off 1/2 their inventory. Vaccine arrives in '21, people start traveling again.....but, uh oh, computer chip shortage slows new car production drastically. Rental companies caught flat-footed with new demand and low inventory. Just read yesterday that rental rates as high as $700/day in Hawaii so people are renting U-Haul trucks to drive around.

What is my point, you may ask? This might just answer why a used car might be purchased for more than it originally sold for, right now. Do you think someone renting a 21K mile Jeep in HI has any clue, or cares that it might be a used vehicle from Delaware?

What is really crazy is I just priced-out a special order 2021 F150, yesterday, from a local dealer and can get it for $9K off MSRP. Now it may take 6 months to get here but you can't buy a used, 1 or 2 year old F150, right now for $9K less than original MSRP. Used dealer I recently sold my '17 F250, with 37K miles, sold it for $1K MORE than I paid for it in 2017 and yet I can order a brand new, 2022 F250, today, for $5K off MSRP......never seen anything like it.

Just checked carvana, got offered 36.5k almost 2k more than I paid OTD about 2 years ago on my 2019 2wd sport. Thinking about taking it and just waiting since I work from home anyway and only put 3k miles on in all of last year

Just a heads up to you guys to try and get the best price. Check your quotes with and without checking the box that asks if you have any mods on the car. When I priced my truck there was a $2k difference. Upon drop off, the guy doing the receiving didn’t even seem to care much about the mods (although I did have the Enkei RPT1s, TRD skid plate, and knockoff pro grill). Didn’t even ask any questions about them. My guess is you can get away with some fairly cheap stuff...aftermarket grill, skid plate, decals, colored badges, etc. just so your truck doesn’t look completely stock.

Just a suggestion if you’re willing to go through the trouble. And I assume no liability if it doesn’t work. Haha.

It truly is crazy. I just bought a new subaru two days ago. Was looking at used but they were so damn close to new pricing and interest rates were 2.5-2.7% from what I saw it made sense to buy new at 0% for 63 months. Got the VIP pricing even though I didn't have the VIP paperwork or anything.

Sold: '19 TRD OR - It will always be in my heart.
Vroom offered me $41K for my 2019 TRDOR, no leather/sunroof/etc. Just the tech package. A national dealer matched Vrooms offer within 30 seconds of negotiation. I could not believe it. Then I went online and saw a 2019 TRDOR in CA listed for $45,900. Wow!

Just to add to what someone said about rentals. Have a friend needed a car ASAP took a daily rental for $50 a day a week later rental company said keep the car at $300 a day or turn it in. They turned the car in bought a nice new cheap Mazda 3 sedan. This was in the Midwest.

I recently read something about a shortage of rental cars and sky high prices so people were renting U-Haul trucks to drive around in.

We have rented a car out west for a week the past 20 years. Usually costs us $300. Going to cost us $1600 this year.

I am contemplating three online offers on my 2019 TRDOF Doublecab with 29k:
    Vroom 39,330
    Carmax 36,300
    Carvana 35,500
I plan on hitting the road in our coachmen cross trek 20xg for a few months and can do without a truck for up to a year if prices are high for a while.

I've been screwing around with a windshield replacement claim with Flo insurance and it has been an awful experience. I requested an OEM windshield and I just keep going back and forth from their third party glass claim company Safelite Solutions and my local glass shop to get it approved.

My co worker just said he was hearing about a possible has shortage this summer. If that happens then there will be some awesome deals on trucks. Everyone will be getting econo boxes. Get rid of that truck now and get too dollar. Buy back in cheap. :)

Back then I remember on a July 4th weekend that gas stations on interstate 15 between Los Angeles and Las Vegas were charging $6 a gallon. Some casinos were even offering gas stations gift cards as a promos to get people to make the trip.

I am REALLY tempted to buy and then sell my leased 2020 TRD off road to Vroom. Truck has all options except the advanced tech pack, sticker is $44,611

    Lease buyout (to purchase) including NC 3% tax : 39,902.96 . Vrooms offer: 43,423.00 profit = $3520.04

You'd think you could trade a lease in, but its US bank and they do not offer the same price to 3rd parties. The buyout on the contract is only for the customer, not a dealership. They ask for market rate for anyone else wanting to buy it. Even doing that I make $3500. Tough call because I can just drive my 2018 Chevy Volt and enjoy the cash.

I also made money on my 2017 GTI I sold Vroom a year ago when I got the truck.

There’s a lot of people dumping their trucks right now for a couple thousand dollars, but I have a feeling they’ll realize soon that they forgot why they bought a Tacoma in the first place.

or they will wait till gas prices really go up and every one wants to dump their trucks and they will buy another on the cheap.. :) or maybe they bought the tacoma and aren't real happy with it, or maybe they bought on a whim and regret it..
