Gas Tank Fills slow

A couple down and out locals ran out of gas in a remote location so I stopped to help out and let them siphon some gas from my 2017 Taco.

Little did I know the 1/4 tube they used effed up the flapper valve or something so when I fill my tank I can only pump gas at very light pressure for a few seconds at a time and it shuts off...

Has anyone heard of this or know the fix??

 

Get a new fill valve? Or start doin the ole poke n prod, fonzi routine with a screwdriver? I'm surprised they were able to get fuel from the tank.

 

Help please... Replaced the fuel filler neck but the slow fill problem persists. Search everywhere for a rollover check valve for a 2017, but it doesn’t exist. It seems this may be part of the tank,....will I need to replace tank?

 

Try dealer . it may or may not be expensive. At least they can troubleshoot . Sometimes, $hit happens when you're just trying to help. Hope you can get it fixed

Sounds like the tank is not able to vent while filling.

Try taking a look at the vent hose if you can.

 

Try taking the truck for a rough bouncing ride .

 

It could be the vent valve or “refueling valve” is stuck.
Or possibly the evap canister is saturated with fuel.

Unfortunately, this is another situation where helping someone else, cost you.
I know the feeling, I’ve been on both sides. I will commend you for being a nice guy and actually trying to help someone in need. Next time, you would be better off bringing the person fuel. A fuel can is cheaper than a repair bill on your truck.

It’s not the roll over valve, that is usually on top of the tank and has no effect on filling. There should be a plastic flapper in the filler tube or connected parts (it may be stuck on good to either of the connection points). This flapper acts to shut the pump off by closing when fuel starts running up the neck. Check that.

The EVAP “could” cause the issue by not allowing the tank to vent. You would also notice a loud “pshhh” noise after running the Taco as the tank cannot vent. This is highly unlikely to be harmed. Most likely the tube was forced in and broke the flapper apart. Pull the fill tube and check for debris.

 

It seems that this would be true for other than 3rd Gen, I cannot locate a part # for this, on another forum someone posted it's part of the tank and not a separate part. Taking back to mechanic to drop the tank.... maybe the valve can be moved back into place, if not a new tank is about $570...

 

I usually pull a lower line and cycle the gas through to fill fuel. Never liked the idea of shoveling stuff down the filler but also rarely have a siphon or pump

 

It's 100% the flapper, you're gonna have to drop the tank and break it off. You can't replace it, but its not critical.

 

Fair enough This is all going off the assumption that these issues were a result of the siphoning. I had to replace a similar part on my Miata due to the same issue, but after looking at parts diagrams I don't know if our Tacoma's have an anti-siphon/fuel-shut-off value?

Since we are filling an enclosed container, as fuel enters air must escape. Gas pumps know when to shut off based on pressure (or technically vacuum inside the pump handle). By using the venturi effect, the pump uses the air pressure coming out of the gas tank, and when this pressure decreases, the pump shuts off. So what can cause issues filling the tank? First, the air cannot escape solely out of the filler neck. If this occurs, the fuel going into the tank has to fight the air coming out which results in gas overflowing the filler tube and essentially blocking the air pressure to the pump causing it to shut off. This is where the EVAP system comes into play. As you drive around (remember, the exhaust system is below the tank) or park in the sun, the fuel tank heats up. If this pressure is not released, the tank could expand (which is not a good thing). We could solve this issue by venting the gas fumes out into the atmosphere, but this isn't very good for the environment so we have an EVAP system. Basically, the fumes travel through a one-way valve from the gas tank to a charcoal canister that "soaks" the residual fuel and vapors so that they do not pool up. From there, they travel from the canister in the rear of the truck to the intake where they are burned up.

Usually, a broken flapper will cause the pump to shut off instantly, while a tank venting issue will allow you to pump for a bit. While it could be a full EVAP canister (this is why you never fill past the first click at the pump, the gas has nowhere to go but into the EVAP system or back into the pump), the gas will usually vaporize after a few days and would not be related to the potential cause. There are more things at play, but this is the gist of the system.

 

Where is the flapper located? On the tank inlet?

I also find it strange these strangers had a hose to siphon gas on them. It sounds like they were pretty forceful with your Taco.
