Picture perfect day on the Maine coast. Working hard cleaning up the campground. 5 kegs of flight deck. Bonfire on the rocks over the water. Family member showed up in his 2001, lives it’s whole life on Cape Cod, and it’s about rusted through its 2nd frame. 4B46009C-8D85-4D51-AFBB-1CB0BFF23A59.jpg97E49EE6-7658-47E4-8215-D2E9C9480F2F.jpg

    @Plain Jane Taco

Do you have any pictures of the fire pit? Cleaned and empty.

I'm looking for ideas on fire pit designs.

    Thank You!

Is there anything under the steel bowl?

Do you have to use pavers as a base?

The basic set up is just 36 curved landscape blocks with a 36" steel firepit bowl without the legs. Very simple. What you place it on is completely up to you. You certainly don't have to use pavers....or anything for that matter.

I wanted a very solid, level base for it to sit on though. So I used 9 16"×16" pavers as the base....basically a 4'×4' square.

I cut out the 4x4 square and dug down 4" and leveled it as much as possible. Then I laid down a couple of layers of weed mat. Next I added 2" of compacted and leveled paver stone, followed by 1" of compacted and leveled paver sand. Then I laid down the 16×16 pavers.....which are about an inch thick. This brought me up to ground level. And just to make sure there would be no migration it's all locked together with paver lock around the perimeter....under the soil.

Next I filled in the spaces between the pavers with sand.....a lot like grouting tile. Then it's just a matter of laying down the 36 landscape blocks.

What is the overall height? I want it high enough that it doesn't become a trip hazard.

What do you think about stamped concrete as a base instead of pavers, pros/cons, if any?

Did you use any concrete adhesive to lock the fire pit blocks?

You can build it as low or high as you want. 3 rings seemed right for me. It's certainly not a trip hazard at that height. It's very obvious it's there.

No adhesive. The whole thing as a unit is quite heavy. In the 5 years I've had it nothing as moved at all. That said....you could use construction adhesive if you wanted.

Not sure what the height is. Less than 18" I would guess.

Don't know what stamped concrete is....or at least not by that name

Thanks Rob. It's kinda my thing. Yard work it relaxing for me. Yeah....I'm weird.

It started years ago with wanting a clean, soft place for my kids to play. They're older now. But I still have it as a "hobby".

I'm just getting ideas right now. Thanks for your input, it's appreciated.

This is what I mean by stamped concrete.

Stamped concrete is the only term I know for this procedure.
