That's what I thought too. But the rapid dissipation if a tank was to somehow rupture wouldn't explode. The tanks are made to pressure release in a certain way in an accident. You can shoot at a tank point blank and it won't explode. The biggest problem is producing hydrogen. It's quite expensive to do so at the moment.

There are PHEV's so you can charge a hybrid if it's a PHEV

Good points. The only concern I would have is the escaping H2 flowing into the cabin when igniting, but I would hope there's "firewall" type solutions to that.

I think hydrogen generation could be a useful strategy for storing excess power generated by solar or wind. So, if the production at any given moment is higher than demand, excess electricity can be used to electrolyse water into hydrogen and oxygen. That hydrogen can be stored and used to power generators if demand increases or production drops . An issue with solar and wind is the daily fluctuations in production and demand, since electricity is very difficult to store, this could be used as a strategy to stabilize production.

Gas burns too, there’s inherent risk with concentrating any form of power to the degree necessary to provide usable range. The Hindenburg happened because the hydrogen was able to burn atmospheric oxygen as the tank envelopes also burned becoming one huge mantle. A leak in a non combustible vessels could burn like a Bunsen burner but the bigger problem with hydrogen is the molecules are so much smaller that containment is more of an issue plus it’s normally a gas and not a liquid so it has to be pressurized substantially to have much of it. This would turn that Bunsen burner into a torch. Or possible fail explosively like a propane tank. I’m not sold on hydrogen fuel cells myself. I think there’s a ways to go before we top out on battery capacity, safety, and recharge speed. I think plane and shipping propulsion are the biggest obstacles to overcome.

Hydrogen fuel cells check a lot of boxes if methane/natural gas cracking technologies improve and there is commensurate investment in fueling infrastructure. I really hope it happens but Toyota seems to have moved their hedge more toward PHEVs and that is certainly coming to the Tacoma soon.

Seems like the sweet spot would be a Tacoma PHEV. Ditch the sunroof and add solar panels.

Let's be honest, there's nothing sexy about an electric vehicle. Ok maybe my opinion but I'm sticking with it.

I think it is a pretty sexy that a Tesla Model 3 can absolutely smoke Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat in drag racing. A 50k station wagon beating the crap out of a 70k drag racer is pretty fun to watch.

It is admirable how much Dodge has pumped into those old formulas though. Big engine. Crap refinement in all ways. Fast and loud. Obnoxious and fun. I’d never buy one, but I’d take my neighbor’s for a spin once a blue moon.

Still 4-5 years out, a bit early for pics. Way early for prognosticators too but what the hey.

Toyotas SUV hybrid packages produce anywhere from 219 to 302 hp and provide AWD without conventional transmission, transfer case or rear drive shaft. With some minor tweaks, it would be a logical fit for the Taco.

With the HAWD Sienna I think this may be what the Tacoma will have possibly saying farewell to rear solid axle and leaf spring setup.

The “sexiness” factor is one of perspective, we’ve been glorifying loud throaty cars for decades in movies and advertising, I had trophy truck posters on my walls as a kid. It’ll take time but kids will start having posters of Tesla’s or any number of super cars that use hybrid technology now instead of traditional pure ICE. I for one would love to get rid of the “fast and furious” wannabes that blap past my house at 2 am or the charger crowd who should be getting noise ordinance tickets.
