And it wouldn't be because they suddenly make your vehicle a gross polluter; Toyota, decided to say fuck paying the extra certification to cover 2003 models (and whatever other models are affected).

It's the same for handguns in CA and manufacturers not paying their fees to stay on the roster.

I found on an mr2 fourm you can put the upper and lower intake manifold off a 3vze onto a 5vzfe

At that point the only thing would be a dead giveaway is batch fire coil vs distributor

It's less Tacoma and more mod
California has a very detailed process for checking that your engine is the correct engine. They have a fun little handbook with details on every engine for things you should look for to identify it. They would absolutely notice that your ignition type has changed, because part of their process is checking your ignition timing. Not to mention they know what the various gas outputs should be from these engines. If you played mix and match exhaust parts from the older 3.0 to the 3.4 the NoX output and cO would be off by a telling amount

Fortunately for 2000 and newer they don't require the tailpipe/dyno emissions testing in CA anymore. Just visual and OBDII check

God forbid you have a car that gets flagged like my Miata way back when for being a 'gross polluter'

Have to go into a STAR station after that, where they absolutely pick your car apart and find any and every reason to not pass it.

It was a completely gutted Miata NA with Jackson Racing supercharger; base model so manual everything. Fun as fuck car but I kept it smog legal as long as possible to drive it straight to Laguna Seca versus trailering it.
