Just traded 2009 jetta tdi for 2011 access cab 4x4 2.7I4 ,I wish I had that little Vw diesel in my Tacoma. I was patiently waiting to see if VW was bringing their pickup to the states.(Check out the Vw amerock), nice truck. As it turns out its not happening any time soon.The2.2 L turbo diesel in the jetta is the same one they use in that truck I think.I also read somewhere that toyota had a hand in the design of their truck. That is what sold me on the idea of buying my Tacoma. The 2.2L diesel in the Jetta was Incredible 140 hp plenty of torque and get up and go (very impressive).I read over in Europe that they get 170 hp out of that engine. I figure if Toyota could build a 2.7L I 4 intercooled turbodiesel that passed the tier 2 or 3 emissions standard lets say had 150-200 hp Got 30-35 mpg they would take the US truck market.Has anyone checked out the Mahindra? Its the new diesel p/u coming to the US from India. Many delays and legal problems getting here(US).I hope if it does it will stimulate Toyota,VW,Ford,GM etc. to produce fuel efficient clean diesel p/u trucks like they have in the rest of the world . There are many pros and little cons in my opinion to owning a diesel.I really dont know anything about the HILUX but it has to be one hell of a truck. I wish they sold it here.

Oh yeah the little VW (Golf Caddy) from the 80s . Naturally aspirated 1.6 L I4 maybe 60 hp I forget the spec . Now put a turbo and after cooler on it, 1.9 tdi 100 hp now you have a rocket. I have had 4 Jetta diesels, I live in upstate NY Oswego County the lake effect snow capital of the world( Very COLD winters ) no block heaters and never had a problem with starting or gelling. Great little diesels, almost legendary.

Agreed.Modern gas engines are on par with diesels as far as reliability and longevity. The cost to have a diesel as an option will buy a hell of a lot of gas which more than compensates for any mileage gains. If you need torque that bad you probably need a full size truck.

Maybe someone here is more knowledgeable on diesels than I am, but I don't really get the maintenance argument. I spent some time around a local mechanic who did all the maintenance on a fleet of 20 plus ambulances. This was around ten years ago and the whole fleet was 7.3 ford powerstrokes. Normal maintenance schedule was lube oil and filter plus fuel filter every 3K. Then every 9K was transmission service and tire rotation, brake check/service. This is on a 10K lb emergency vehicle that absolutely can't break down. They normally got around 130K out of them and then the transmission was usually first thing to show signs of wear. But those things got run HARD. I don't remember him needing to change injectors or injection pumps. For a diesel Tacoma that does not need to put out the type of power it takes to pull a huge toybox trailer or do similar things, it would seem like a few more quarts of oil and an extra filter to change every 15K would take care of it. I think most of the maintenance issues we hear about recently with diesels is crappy engineering and implementation of EGR and diesel particulate filters. And lots of guys like to "bomb" their trucks to make more power. Asking a 6.0 diesel to hold up to 400HP with aftermarket mods is going to cause reliability problems. If Toyota were to come up with a well designed small diesel to sell here, and people left them alone instead of modding them, I think the fuel mileage would pay for the increased oil and filters cost. I have not heard anyone talking bad about the VW TDI's? Anyone know more and want to chime in?

Hadn't thought of the option cost to add the engine in the first place. On a fullsize american truck, I agree that you can buy a lot of fuel for the cost difference. It would be interesting to see what the option would actually cost. If they started to sell well, I am sure the cost would come down.

I find it interesting that a lot of diesel owners chime in with no negative ownership issues. I think those w/negative comments either don't own diesels or owned them in the early 80s when GM attempted to introduce them and did a poor job. I know a few diesel owners that love them. I'd love to drop a diesel in my truck (dieseltoyz.com) but the price for their install is a bit expensive. The thought of of more torque, more mileage, more life (not that we need that w/the 3.4 though) is a nice selling point. I'm not sure if the imported Toyota diesel can handle bio/WVO but that would be a nice option as well.

I have owned 3 diesels one in a Chevy 6.2 not enough power to get out of its own way, 2 Cummins plenty of power, $4500 options when purchased new, any parts needed such as brake rotors, shocks, the parts guy would say, Oh you say its a Diesel well those rotors were $240 apiece if I remember right.

Ahhh,But Your talking domestic s--t .GM needed Isuzu to do their P/U diesel,Cummins ok not a Dodge or Chysler Diesel, Ford Uses Navistar IH. I heard Ford was developing their own though. My point is these domestic automakers suck and can't build their own powerful fuel efficient diesel. Ford has a Ranger diesel overseas I wonder If its a ford diesel? If you search the world and saw the vehicles that were out there you would be amazed .The North American consumer is being manipulated by the government, big oil and the big three. All they want to do is shove hybrids down our throats. Try to recoup your fuel savings out of one of those. Then we the american tax payer have have to pay for the research and development. No thank you give us clean efficient reliable diesels like the Toyota Hilux and VW Amerok. Then when gas/fuel reaches $5.00gal watch all the domestic diesel P/U owners cry.

My mother had a 2000 VW diesel, 1.9L that starts on cold ass days without being plugged in. Just have to let the plugs warm up for 15 to 30 seconds. 30 on a bitter bitter cold day. She was up to 90,000 miles and sold it to my brother. There has been almost no maintenance and it gets 48 miles to the gallon. The thing is quick too! It will take my 4 banger anyday. I would love to have a bigger version in my truck. 2.7L diesel!!!!!

I always wondered how a TDI would work in a Tacoma...I drove a 2002 TDI Beetle for a month and it was quick/torquey. I drove it like I stole it and got 38-40mpg. 400+ miles to a tank is nice also!

Selling my 96 Tacoma to fund the FJ80 build up.
TDI swaps into a Suzuki samurai do not go over very well I can't imagine them being better in a Taco... The 1.9 VW TDI does not like high RPM and once you give it the aero package of a cinderblock the Highway MPG #'s fall below 30 hwy add Big Rubber and they can drop below 25 ~ This in a Samurai.

The Sammy Diesel guys prefer the 1.6L ~
