the bed rails have some hardware I believe. WHen I got my truck, a buddy had the cover but none of the "hardware" that comes from the factory.

The pic shows this stuff (I have no idea what is required is why I am asking). I see 6 of one type of thingy, and 6 of another type of thingy, and two rail caps, and then a bolt. LOL Is there more?

Those tires look smoked - decent price point for the wheels though I guess

 damn - I don't even want one but for 200 I'm tempted.

edit - I think there's some cutouts on the rail covers for the OEM cover.

I tell ya, for what it is, I would spend my money of a Softtopper first, or any other tonneau. Especially since you have to butcher up the bed rail caps and do some caulking to keep it from leaking a lot. When I had my Sport I had a Bak Revolver and yes, it was considerably more money but it was also considerably better looking, more functional, more leak proof, and probably more secure.

I has a soft topper  why not both!? But yeah, I think that's just too much shenanigans to have both. I don't need it water tight anyway, my plan is basically some (can be not water tight) storage for camping gear and MTB back there on trips.

I didn’t see all that stuff when I looked, I just know there was a bunch of crap that was a pain to get. And wanted to make sure if someone wanted the cover, they know enough to check for all the hardware.

Yea, as long as your storage is water tight who cares if the tonneau is right

I had the tonneau on the 6' Sport bed, and then a soft topper at first on this 5' Pro bed, but sold that after the first winter with it and now I have a high rise cap. Of the 3 I definitely prefer the cap. For me, it the perfect choice. If I didn't have a trailer for tall/bulky items I might feel differently. Hell, I even have a receiver mounted cargo basket so if I knew I was going somewhere and was going to pick up some (under 300 lb) trees i could throw them on there.

Yea, and like I said, I don't know jack shit about it and wanted to be sure before I had the guy pay for it. Apparently this entire kit is nearly as much as the guy wants for the cover if you buy it from a dealer.

Eh, I like to be able to take the topper off - I only use it sparingly, and don't want to have it out in the winter in the freeze/thaw cycles if I don't use it in the winters. :notsure:

If I could fit a mountain bike under a tonneau easily, I'd be there in a heartbeat instead of the soft topper. I'm still thinking about ways to do it, I could probably fit 1 pretty easily. Might need a slide to make it easier, but don't think I could pull off 2 reasonably, under the tonneau. Could fit 2 upright, though.

Well, I suppose if you lay it down ass in first, then turn the front wheel you might be able to get one under a tonneau. Even kids handlebars are 520mm (20.47"), so I am not sure it is possible. That was my biggest issue with my other truck and the tonneau. If we went to the beach and loaded it up with a weeks worth of crap, I still had to put some of it in the back seat area. My favorite cooler is one with wheels and a handle. It was too tall by an inch so I had to use another one without wheels. That sucked.

I take the front wheel off, I would be fine even if I had to take a pedal off too, I run QR wheels and it wouldn't be a constant on/off to get under the tonneau - I'd only really be using it on a longer trip or a specific road trip w/ MTB, it won't be an every day thing. Daily use - I'm just going to get a QR hub thing for the front rail and put the bike up in the bed like normal people do. That just won't fit under the soft topper.

For that I plan to do this:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...er-a-flush-height-shell.436953/#post-12662345

Put a hub mount on the rear or front, and then flip the soft topper up over it. It's not theft proof, but keeps it out the rain for long trips, etc etc.

Ahh, cool, then a tonneau should work. Easy to test with a sheet of plywood if you have one laying around. Or any piece of wood that fits across the bed rails. I checked that link, those guys with the cab high caps have a disadvantage the softopper doesn't have, in that the flip up window makes the opening shorter than yours. Not a real big deal if you can put the bikes in on their side then stand them up. I think the idea with the fork mount bolted to the 2x12 seems like the way to go. Fit tight between the bed sides and it wouldn't budge and you can run it front to back if you needed without taking it out. That one guy though has 37" and that's what I have. On a short bed I was afraid it would look like a turtle shell but since I have a Prinsu with an awning on one side and a gun case on the other it's all the same height...........actually about an inch shorter. So asthetics are not an issue.

Let me ax you this. How come bike riders don't use a hitch mounted carrier with a heavy duty cable lock and a waterproof fitted motorcycle cover? On that thread in the link you posted the one guy said a lot of people use fold down carriers that allow for the tailgate to open. With a substantial cable lock through the chain eyes of your receiver and the frames/wheels of the bikes no one is getting them off.

You'd be surprised how easily people will steal your shizz.

    A couple reasons:

    1. It kicks out the departure angle/can scrape. I have interest in doing MTB/wheeling combined trips, so it's a minor thing but it's there
    2. I plan to put it in the cap and sleep in the bed on MTB trips. With it in the topper, I can back into a campsite or even a parking lot, and inconspicuously camp without fear that someone will see my bike and think it can be theirs
    3. Cheaper. I have other uses for a topper/tonneau too. I don't have another use for a hitch carrier.

To each their own. If it works for others, great. For me, I want to have it in the topper.
