If you think it pissed me off you think too highly of yourself.

I'm here for a discussion/debate not to try to piss anyone off. If that floats your boat go for it though....

So you're only here for emotions and not facts. That's ironic.

April, 1992. I'm getting ready to help stock trout in a stream about an hour from home. We're gonna run a float box on about a mile stretch of water. As I'm getting ready to leave, I pick up and then put down my S&W 6906 with shoulder rig and spare mag. Anybody that has run a float box knows it's ****ing hard work and I really don't need any more weight. 'Sides, statistically speaking, what are the chances something's gonna happen. In a spit second I decide to take it.

We get there around 9am and start our stretch. We finish around 2pm. The last 100 yards or so is relatively flat shallow water, so we are dragging the float box. At our take out point there is a small bridge and we'll the leave the float box there for the sportman's club to pick it up. As we approach the bridge, there are for lack of words, five biker guys. We're about 15 yards from the bridge, still dragging the box. The "head" guy asks us if we are gonna stock this stretch. I replied "No, we finished up about 100 yards or so upstream and besides this isn't really good water." He responds "Oh, so you only stock the areas you fish" I said "Nope, I don't even fish this stretch much and not on the first day." Apparently that was the wrong thing to say, because that's when the threats started and the five guys started to spread out. "We're gonna fuck you up real good. Wait till you get out. Gonna beat your ass into the mud." My buddy and I keep walking as the leader continues his threats. I said "Look, I just want to get to my truck and have a cold drink." His repsonse, "That ain't gonna happen." Distance now is ten yards, maybe a little less. At that point, I stopped, opened my jacket, placed my hand on the grip and asked him "Is there a problem?" The look on his face was priceless. His eyes were literally as big as saucers. Whatever happened next, if he chose to escalate, he was getting the first two center mass. He point his hands up palms out, said "No problem. No problem at all." Once they left, I got out of the water and started to shake violently, nauseated to the point of puking. And it flashed thru my mind how close I came to leaving my pistol at home that day.

Even though it's almost thirty years since it happened I can recall it vividly. I remember the utter clarity I had when I made the decision what I would do if they chose to carry thru or attempt to carry thru with their threats. "That ain't gonna happen." was a threat of bodily harm and I refuse to be a victim.

So my own council will I keep when and where I decide to carry.

I feel like it depends where you are. I, for example, prefer concealed. I carried concealed all the time as a DE resident. Then I moved just across the border. MD gives virtually ZERO CCW permits, and DE doesn't issue non-resident permits. Now, if I want to carry in DE, open carry is my only option. That said, having to OC in DE, I picked up a retention holster or two for my various sidearms in order to prevent jerkoffs from effing with a simple IWB Kydex.

Scary shit for sure. I carry in the outdoors all the time as well. Run into meth heads, grizzlies (not expected and my largest piece isn't going to cut it so I have bear spray now), black bears and mountain lions in the woods enough times that I do. Like I mentioned prior, situational defines my carry.

Interesting reading the back and forth/pros and cons of this "debate", and I think how lucky you guys are to even have that choice. Here in CA.,the state has decided to let the population of 39.56 million prople have 70,593 C/C permits, - that's it. In your vehicle, loaded? outside carry? forget about it, then you are the criminal. And in S.D County, your "home defence" weapon has to locked in a steel cabinet or safe or have a trigger lock. I'm sure the 120,000 documented gang members in SO CA. will comply.

Like I told my buddy, with our store and being robbed twice (we weren’t there either time, luckily) that is my biggest concern. He said you want to pay to defend yourself for defending yourself? I said unfortunately, that is what this world has come to.

Which ordinance in SD says it has to be unloaded?

Only ordinance I can find is for City of San Diego (not county) and only specifies that it must be in a safe or with a trigger guard. Nothing about unloaded.

Situational defines my carry as well. Since I don't know what situation will transpire, I will CCW. Everywhere. Every day. Not because I'm afraid. But fear. Fear of not kissing my wife goodnight one more time. Fear of not seeing my youngest marry his girlfriend. Fear of not seeing his two older sisters. The one, blowing in the house like a whirlwind, lighting up every room with her craziness and unconditional love for her family. Or seeing my oldest and her four kids. Their faces lighting up when we walk in her house. The silliness while we're crowed around a small table eating pizza. Falling asleep watching Toy Story with them sprawled all over, the family room a wreck.

Those are a few of my reasons.

since when do mass murderers use logic in their decisions to murder? When it comes to security, it's more logical to train and act based on the exception, not the rule.

I have carried for about 14 years now, always concealed. I think it is a tactical advantage for people not to know whether or not you are carrying. It could be argued that open carry is a deterrent, but I think being a "gray man" far outweighs that. Also, I don't know anyone that trains in retention that isn't paid to.

Edit to add-come to think of it, I don't know anyone in the business that thinks open carry is a good idea.

Open carry, kind hard to conceal this .45 long colt. Humor aside, when I bought my extremely rural property I knew that my 410 that I used for upland bird hunting was useless for defense. A pistol for me just won't cut it since the predators here in the PNW range from Mountain Lions to Drug Cartel and I have serious need for stopping power out to 150 yards. The second photo is of the Ranger Point Precision ghost ring peep site that substituted over the stock Truglo dovetail sites.
