If you buy the tune from KDMAX directly, it’s $100. You need some hardware and software on top of that (from OVTuned/VF Tune) to be able to do it yourself.

The alternative is to have somebody take care of it for you (usually around $300). There’s a few advantages in going this route.
    1) Most vendors will update the ECU with the latest Toyota calibration at no extra cost
    2) No need to learn the process, install software, mess around with antivirus…
    3) Most vendors offer some level of ongoing support
    4)etc

I’d highly recommend reaching out to a local tuner and share your goals. If you’re scenario would be better served by tuning your own truck, they’ll let you know and probably even help get you on the right track.

I’m in Reno Nevada by the way and happily serve the are

    Regards,
    Mike

Even at $350 if it takes away the crappy shifting worth every penny to me! But no not Baltimore! I will leave my Steeler gear at home- NOT! Nothing like a weekend for seafood! Ok that will be easy to convince the wife she loves Baltimore food!

Haha - Here's your plan: Have a crappy drive to Baltimore, get some succulent crab cakes and other seafood items, get your truck tuned, and then enjoy the night and day difference of your truck's drivability on the way home!

Does anyone know if you must have the Tactrix cable to do the ECU update? Or can the vfTuner cable do double duty to update the ECU and flash the tune?

I think the guys getting 20+ mpg live in places with no hills. I daily drive SOCAL freeways = fast (75 or so) and in and out of valleys. If I slow down I become a road hazzard. I already get passed like I am standing still at 75. But I am used to the crappy milage...I drove my 2014 Tacoma for 7 years getting around 15 mpg. I was hoping for more than 17 out of my 21.

Had several Tacos over for an upgrade from Kruiser to the KDmax and everyone left smiling.. They could not believe the shifting could get any better!!

If you are in Alabama, want the tune or just have questions, let me know.. I'd be happy to chat about the tune and the process.

    Cheers,

    John

Taco seems to like 65 mph for max mileage even with rolling hills.

I got hills here and get 20+ mpg per tank. Stock tires and staying near the speed limit of 55 and 65 mph are what does it.
