I recently saw a picture of a 3rd gen with a double cab and a short bed frame but it had a long bed that extended behind the rear axle. Has anyone else seen this? Who makes the this box?

Is the axle shifted back also? A LB on a SB frame would be weird looking without modding the frame. I believe the frame is straight under the cab until the rear cab mount, then tapers through the rear suspension area.

I have lightly considered this.... extend the frame, move/add mounts for the 6.1' bed, lose the leaf springs, 38ish" lower arms would keep the stock front mount and place the axle back 13ish"....

A four link rear would be even stock or a bit taller. The droop could be massive.

In the picture I saw ( I can't find it now ) at first glance you'd say it a 5' box because the space between the cab and box are correct but the back end looks longer

Ahhhh, apologies.... I misread the question.

Perhaps a one off custom? A good custom body shop could graft a section in.

I'm in Schenectady County, just outside Albany County. That looks more like taking a section out making the bed shorter. I guess the same process could be used to extend the bed...

Yeah, exactly... that would be a way to extend, as well as shorten. Given that I can be at the far side of Schenectady County in roughly 1.5 hours, one shop could mod both beds. If this idea doesn't float with you, no worries here.

That would be a lot of weight behind the axle.

    I've not seen this. :notsure:

Extending the bed another foot behind the rear axle would look... Bizarre.

It would also be stupidly expensive. You can't marry composite like you would steel, so you would have to fab up an entirely new bed before extending all of the other pieces.

Or, instead of all that pain, money, and labor to create something that most people would call a hideous hack job, you could just buy a bed extender instead for like 300 bucks.

Creating a structural splice in glass reinforced plastic is doable. Not a lot of fun to do accurately, but doable.

I agree with your take though, whether it be lengthening the frame or the bed. Heck, some folks don't even like the look of the DCLB as it came from the factory. Variations on the theme might more controversial.

Nah! That was just all that 3.5l torq.

I feel that way these days on my bike with a few extra pounds. Unintentional wheelies at lower and lower throttles.

Now the idea seems plausible, I'm not sure I'd be willing to go with it at the moment. The cost might be too much to handle. I agree that it would look very odd from the outside but I also agree that it might end up looking like a bad hack job in the inside. I'm not sure I would agree with the idea that it would add a lot of weight behind the rear axle as it would only be adding a foot to the rear of the bed. I would need to look at something that has already been done before I decide to go that route.

I suppose I should add the details of my truck to my signature... I took delivery of this truck on March 31, My wife and I were placed in mandatory quarantine April 2 do to her testing positive for Covid and I tested Positive on the 19th so to date I've only been able to drive the truck 35 miles since I bought it. Those miles were from the dealership to my house then to and from the medical facility that gave me my positive test result. So needless to say, I have not had much time to enjoy my new truck. I will update my signature after I complete this post.
