Too bad internet chat rooms and forums were not available at the turn of the 20th century as you could probably use the search function and see this exact same argument about moving from horse drawn carriages to the horrors of internal combustion engines. Nothing ever really changes argument wise. Just the technology we are arguing about. Some will embrace it and others are terrified it won't work. You really think there was a complete network of gas stations when the first cars appeared. They did not even have stoplights or traffic control for the first cars, much less a paved interstate road system. All that had to be developed.

 

Going from horses to vehicles dramatically changed the speed in which people and goods were moved. Once electric vehicles offer such a drastic change it will be adopted quickly. As it stands, the drawbacks to an EV far outweigh the benefits for the majority of peoples wants and needs.

 

This Edison fellow is a danger to society! And what will happen to the candlestick makers?? Whale oil is obviously superior and has a better infrastructure.

 

Unfortunately in today's fast food..."I want it now" America everyone wants EV's to charge in 5 min or less and get 1000 miles between charges. Some just don't care that the tech is still evolving and get upset that EV's aren't at the level they want it. Patience in today's world is lost.

 

Rivian claims 140 miles added in 20 minutes. Might not work for you. Does for me. But this is a perfect example of how tech gets adopted. Like you, 2-3 years ago I wouldn't consider an EV. A truck did not exist that could go 300-400 miles, fully charge from 20-30 % overnight on the same power as my clothes dryer, add 140 miles in 20 minutes simply could not exist. But deliveries begin in a couple of weeks.

Yes, they are very expensive. And there are not charging stations at every corner. But look back 5 years. What was available then compared to now? Now think about 15 years ahead. Price will decline (comparatively). More charging stations will be added. Mom and pop businesses and very small towns are already adding charging stations to attract business and provide service. Technology will advance.

Naysayers advance the notion that there isn't this and there isn't that. If we declined to do things as a society until perfection was available, most of us would still be writing these missives on paper and mailing them.

Parkinson's Law is the old adage that work expands to fill the time allotted. On a similar note, if we don't expect advancements and positive change to happen, the needed change will not happen. And yes, that often requires government support (tax credits, government sponsored research, etc.) and indeed mandate (leaded fuel, asbestos, etc.).

 

I for one am getting pretty tired of the “it isn’t perfect right out of the gate so it won’t work” arguments or “I will be slightly inconvenienced so no one should be doing it.” It’s so short sighted and Stevesnj is right to call us a fast food, I want it now nation. Dinosaur squeezings are not a unlimited resource and by going about business as usual it’s the next generation that will have to rapidly come up with an alternative.

Last weekend I drove out to the middle of no where in the SW of Oklahoma. There were windmills everywhere. Oklahoma has more wind than it does oil. They even put it in the damn song.

What? You don't want to sit around a hour or so , to save 100's of dollars on a road trip? You are basically saying you don't want to make 200 bucks an hour sitting. When I took my lame gas powered Taco to Lake Tahoe from SD that crap was like 230 bucks in gas. Plus I felt all bad putting 1000 miles on the truck so I changed the oil when I came back like a nerd. Not to mention getting all red eyed focusing on the road instead of sitting back stress free with auto pilot at the wheel.

Try doing this 3 times end to end while searching for the anchor on the last 10’ of rope, then rerigging for the next leg and hoping the ropes don’t snag as you pull them through, as dusk descends. Rappelling was something we did to get home, exhilarating enough but not something we did for it’s own sake. Most of that crowd moved on to bungee jumping anyway. I’d rather sky dive from 12,000 ft, better view and longer ride.

 

Interesting topic all. I can only say that everytime I go shopping on base or most modern shopping centers, there are free charging stations for these vehicles. With the fast advancements in battery technology and infrastructure...I'd go for one now if available. Free is free. lol

It’s seen as going backwards, and understandably so in this case. Many people just lack imagination or only allow it to fuel their fears seeing only the negative aspects. “I can’t imagine”... is one of the more common beginnings to a rebuttal but it assumes nothing will change from the current status quo even though the evidence of change is staring them in the face. While gas stations are typically stand alone service centers that require open air, charging stations are being installed just about anywhere cars get parked or that since charging time is one of the more vocally touted issues it will get more attention from engineers and developers. Other problems will crop up and give cause for resistance but it’s not as if cars and trucks, planes and trains didn’t and still do have growing pains. From steam explosions to derailments, jack knifes to tanker fires, faulty cargo bay doors to unruly attitude software, faulty ignition systems or easily punctured gas tanks, the Industrial Age doesn’t come without cost. Ev’s can’t be expected to be immune from that.

Why the need for needlessly defensive arguments against a non-existent threat from a new and evolving technology? Really -is it that scary?

Yes – if Mars attacks and you are low on charge, you will be SOL… But you know what??, gas also runs out when there’s a hurricanes and everyone decides to bail… Or simply can’t pump cause the power is out!

Would I buy a tesla if I lived in Nunavut? Well, likely not… but for the needs of 99.5% of all vehicle drivers, even current EV performance would fit nicely – assuming a bit of planning skill! For most, it is already a better option than what is in the average person’s garage (or curb). AND the tech is, and WILL continue to improve significantly and fast…

“I do 1,000 mile trips only stopping for 10 minute fuel-up when on fumes and an EV would force me to maybe stop and see something..." THIS sounds like a horrible way to travel – or do anything. I’d rather stop for a good meal and explore a bit. - Oh, what a perfect opportunity for a charge! (In somewhat interesting locales anyway - which may be well scarce in some areas )

Reminds me of the typical tourist’s European vacation: “Live the ultimate European Experience: 13 countries in 7 days - crap hotels and all meals served in your choice of local truck stop McDonalds’! - No need to interact with any locals, or experience any of what you pretend to be there for! – We’ll take you to the BEST places (that allow bus-loads of ill-tempered tourists)!”.

But the evidence is there. – People pay money to subject themselves to this! (and Cruises!) - And A/Ts (sorry - could not help it!).

Nervous nellies think they’ll be forced to go Electric (where did that come from?? – did I miss something?) I’ll say that if someone wants to force me to own a Model S or Taycan by buying it for me… we’ll I guess I’ll surrender all my independent will and humanity - and I’ll take it… - BUT I believe that to be highly unlikely. (But if there is a list somewhere, tell me where I can sign-up!)

It is not that people are not patient to let the tech evolve; it seems more likely that they are so utterly lacking in vision and actual insight, that they think that what they see now is IT – and IT is as good as anything will ever get… because, then, the good old days are behind us anyway, right?

Oh the grid… (Sigh…) Please realize that the electrification effort has had several stages – It id not all suddenly appear by being created into existence... AND know that we have already added massive capacity in the past similar to the needs necessary to accommodate EV adoption.

Also realize that most vehicles sit for 90+% of the time. This energy storage capacity is already being used as an asset as the aggregated storage capacity is already making $$$ (in some areas) simply by using this predictable available capacity. (search "virtual power plant"). Batteries sitting on the grid, HELP the grid – they are not only power suckers. – Guess what – EV owners are making $$$ by participating in offering this flexibility in capacity. (Calm down - No they are not being FORCED to do so, they get compensated to do so - at their whim & discretion at any particular time...).

Get out a bit… Drive an EV. They are badass!

Yep - there is a lot more work to be done – meaning it will be much better. It is a pretty interesting challenge!
