I had a second gen in black sand pearl color that stayed shiny for the first 12 years. Then one August I had to go on a business trip and left it with the windows up sitting outside in the Southern California desert sun for three weeks. When I came back, the roof had that rough feeling and upon close inspection it was crazed and cracked right down to the metal like a dry lake bed in the desert. It didn’t look bad at first, but it had a rough feel when I washed it.

It soon after started to look like yours, but I didn’t do anything about it for another year and it started to rust. Sanded it primed it repainted and re-cleared it (which was a lot more work than I expected) yet the rust is starting to come back in tiny places now despite a lot of careful prep work.

I would demand Toyota fix it and make a stink if they don’t because that’s not right after just 2 years. And complaining is a lot less work than the sanding and painting project will be!

That looks like the Blazing Blue Pearl issues that made me avoid that color when I was shopping. I think those trucks had that problem all over, though.

and.....we have come full circle as expected.

Two dealerships, and many toyota corporate letters/ emails/ calls later (with pics and estimate from a certified toyota collision center, $5,000), they won't cover it. Truck is within the two year bummer - bumper warranty but.....(drum roll)....the millage just past the ever so critical number of 36,000. I should have took it in when I first noticed that little "rough patch" many months ago. Sucks for me. :(

Unacceptable. Blast them all over the Net. Contact an attorney, you may have a class action on your hands without even knowing it.

I think a first start is to find a paint shop that has a mil gauge. They can see how thick the paint is. If its factory thickness, then you can push it. If it is thicker than factory, then that indicates it has been repainted at some point and your SOL.

No point in blasting toyota and getting attorney involved if toyota checks the paint thickness and it indicates its been repainted.

That really sucks, I feel for you man. I got the expensive quotes to fix my son's truck too. And even at thousands of dollars, the painters wouldn't guarantee that the rust wouldn't return. The only shop that would guarantee their work wanted to cut the roof off and weld on a new one!

I agree that going to a lawyer/media is appropriate.

Spray the roof with some of that black bedliner stuff. Will look dope and you will start a whole new overlanding fad and the roof "paint" will be bulletproof.

Stick to your guns. Talk to the Toyotaguy who is in charge of bodywork estimates (not the service manager). I fought them for a year before they agreed to repaint my peeling fenders and do “paint correction” on the hood and roof. It looks good now.

For sure keep me posted...it’s ridiculous how a almost 3yr old truck paint is deteriorating...I contacted the salesman at the dealer I purchased my tacoma from since I have a good relationship with him..he’s going to look into it for me so I’ll let you in he tells me. I am also past the warranty mark because I have 42k miles on it.

it looks like someone sanded your roof or something. It looks so bad. If I were you I would get it wrapped instead of painting it. it'll probably be cheaper and hold up better in the cali sun

    100% same situation.
I don’t see the logic in paint being a mileage issue. In fact if u really think about it , when the truck is driving around it’s not just sitting parked baking under the sun on one side lol .

I have a feeling because it’s CA , we are the first wave of trucks to see this paint issue come up . More time will probably see it a lot more.

My old car is a ‘02 4Runner with 290k that’s still in the family and the roof looks way better than my ~2yr old truck...and it’s been neglected the last 5yrs or so

holy moly i thought cements were clear of this problem. now i wanna go feel my truck up make sure its smooth all over.

OP, if that other thread is anything to off of (the one about a cylinder blowing at 300 miles), you should demand they take your truck back and upgrade you to a trd pro (just a joke)

    Update :
After many many many trips to the dealer and multiple calls to Toyota corporate they at last acknowledge it’s obviously a factory defect. They are replacing the whole hood and replacing the roof. I also believe they are going to repaint the whole truck .

Initially their defense was although it was only 2 years old it had 42k miles and was out of warranty. The damage was a result of “solar convergence” (their words)... also know as the sun lol. We didn’t accept that and kept pushing for months until supposedly more owners of mgm grey Tacoma’s had the “same issue”. Soooooo ya. No color is safe , but at least Toyota will think about fixing it. That would be cool if trucks were stainless steel with no paint , like that giant arch in St. Louis . Seems like it’s held ok for that long ...

Never seen that happen so fast... my truck lives outside and looks like day 1 on the roof. I would just wrap it to save money... you can even wrap it in magnetic (or close to magnetic gray) wrap. To be honest looks like basic neglect. This is coming from my brother with 20 years paint and body experience.
