i havent looked into the 4runners but i wouldnt doubt it if it has the same drivetrain, let alone same engineers programming them lol

It's a different drive train for sure, 4.0L with a 5 speed trans but my point was I get the frustration and feel for you. I would be curious to know if giving the skinny pedal a tap does the same thing on your truck as it does on the T4R. Just seems odd to me that Toyota has regressed so far from building the R154 Supra trans that could reliably take 800hp on stock internals to a 6 speed shitbox that won't shift out of 3rd at cruising speed.

Hmm interesting. Maybe shut the adaptive cruise off and try the old school cruise. See if it still does the same thing. Maybe something is wrong with the TSS sensor in the grill. If you press and hold the cruise on/off button for a few seconds it disables the adaptive radar cruise.

Thanks. Was curious about overall behavior.

Well, I'd certainly be in the check the fluid level camp.

Any chance you have a set of stock wheels/tires to put on it for a 'test'? Curious if the final gearing is a player.

i don't unfortunately, but the dealer did give me a stock one to drive and that one did not do what my truck was doing so now they gave me their demo truck to drive as a loaner which is similar to mine and it also doesn't act like mine does on the highway, i will attach picture of demo truck they are having me drive in mean time

Shoot and here I was complaining about getting stuck in 4th gear 5 years and 70,000+ miles ago. My how time flies!

    https://youtu.be/S3bU3cMwHzY

I will say I am on OVTune 2.0 Prem stock and it does not fix the issue when in cruise but when not using cruise I can maintain 5th at 75-80 all day long provided there is no headwind or larger hills. But cruise still sucks.

Looking to get a community tune or the Performance one whenever that comes out but am still waiting on the replacement for flash manager. So I’m SOL for now but at least tuned.

I’m only on 31.5” tires with no other mods other than taking off the ugly air dam. But have to contend with Kansas wind on a daily basis.

Tune is 100% worth it though. Would take it over a pricier regear any day. But would absolutely regear if I had larger tires or any more weight. 4.88’s at least.

I’ll put my 2c in for a tune provided everything else checks out.

I did not read the whole thread.

I have the Ov tune and man, the engine is just so much happier and it gets better mpgs. I cant comment on the transmission obviously, but i think the tune will solve your issues.

    X2 sir.

Althugh 2 of my buddies have 3rd gens with ATs and they drive/shift perfectly fine, even without the TSB. Not that i will ever get one, super boring to drive those for me.

How are your gears? Have you had your differential checked?

Its not that simple. The tables are optimal torque values plotted against vehicle speed in mph and throttle angle in degrees. Gears, tires, throttle limits, airload caps, shift schedules, torque converter lock/unlock schedules all also come into play.

You first need to make all maps identical except for 4wd, ect, and cold engine. Then log, figure out vehicle speed and throttle angle when you want it to upshift. Raise the torque values in all maps by 2%. Repeat until it upshifts when you want.

That's bizarre. Its not like you are driving a 4 banger lifted suv/truck. Plenty of power with 1GR FE and 2GR FKS IMHO, something definitely wrong with the ECU logic.

My freaking 1990 AC mazda B2200 with like 97 hp did highway speeds in 5th no problem at all, of course it was bone stock becuase i was broke and in highschool .

I'm aware of the process and don't need to see all your tables/data. I'm just interested to see your values for 76 speed for these 2 angles.

I can only report if my truck is not up to fully temp, it will not shift into 6th at any speed. My 2001 tundra did the same for 4th. I would suspect it as normal.

Regear with 5.88s, it will shift then. Good luck with your truck.

No update besides trans reflash was done, speedo calibration was done, pedal commander was done, and still have the issue of holding gear and 5300 rpms for several miles at a time
