A 285/75 will have about 7% difference so you wont see much until the higher speeds.

Alright Einstein all I know is he stated his tire size and gear ratio and commented on his MPH which is not accurate. So you're reply about gear ratio alone is irrelevant. I'm done dude.

Tire size is the only thing that changes speedo. Not gears.

Yeah you guys are totally right my speedo did not change. Which is awesome because I'm sending this hypertech box back.

I'll be honest, the 5.29s in my MT are way lower than I thought they would be. About 72-74 is my top speed while keeping the revs under 3k.

I'm also running a kdmax tune - she's a bit touchy now.

However I'm about to do a cross country trip in the next 10 days. Will be gone a month. I'll really get to test these things out and I'm pretty excited for it!

Edit: I'm also looking forward to doing donuts in 2lo now!! Hahaha

 

This is long thread..I'm wondering about REM polishing Nitro gears; specifically whether I should get it done and if it hurts the gears lifespan. I keep reading conflicting opinions

 

It polishes the gears removing imperfections in the manufacturing process. I'm not aware of any negative effects or opinions.

 

Deposit down on 5.29 Yukon's with ARB front air locker. Now the wait..

 

This has probably been discussed a bunch of times.. But I'm skipping to the end of the thread... Thoughts on 5.29s with 33s?

 

I'm getting them with my 33"s. I'm also going to be about 600lbs over stock dry, and 1300lbs+ with passengers and gear. Mostly I chose them because I know how the truck feels at higher RPM and how weak it feels at ~1500 rpm going 70.

It's happiest with stock gears going 40-55, that's just unrealistic for 90% of my miles. I'm either trying to keep up with traffic going 70+ or on city roads/off-road going 20-35.

I'm by no means a lead footer, I never felt like there was an issue with stock tires until I added a lot of weight, like 1000lbs. With 33s that got worse. Even now I'm still okay with how it drives around town, it's mostly at highway speed where I'm either squeezing it hard to stay in 5th at 65 or it's burning fuel like elon musk going 70 in 4th

 

I see all these comments about doing the front locker at the same time as the gears. Is that just because it's easier to do it while everything is apart?

Can I do my gears now and add a front locker later?

 

Nothing but good, pair that with a tune, and you'll get way more smiles per gallon.

what he said. I’m on stock tires still, but with a literal half ton of extra weight. Still totally worth it.

 

Can do it later but you will have to pay for labor twice essentially which is why most do it together. That said you will rarely need the front locker.

 

That and the stock CV shafts aren't the strongest things in the world

 

Update - about 700 miles in. I love the way it drives.
However, I have noticed that during a decel at around 75 mph, I get a noticable moan or whurr and a slight vibe that I can feel through the floor. It isn't enough to immediately startle me. You can't hear it with the radio off. Other than that, seems to drive fine and the break in oil change seemed good

Stock wheels/tires (actually 17" SEMA pro 265/70/17 vs 16" that came with the truck, but same tire size)
I am heavy, last trip to Moab fully loaded I was at 6500 lbs. I still have rear armor (waiting on @Apogee Offroad for their dual swing arm rear bumper) and potentially skids (will probably do aluminum as they're 'just in case'). Winch goes in this weekend, that should be all, but will bring me closer to 6900 lbs fully loaded.

I am considering gears, my taco is heavy and it drives like turds on the highway. I have the KDMax tune, it helps. I don't hate my current wheel setup. I don't need to go bigger for looks nor to keep up with any of the big tire boys on the trails that I do.

That being said, I wouldn't mind bigger tires/wheels if it helps top speed with the right gears, etc.

So, my question is: If I am overweight and growing, but am fine with my stock-ish wheel/tire setup, which gears? Read a bunch of this thread, seems to be a split on opinion in my case. Stock tires, 4.88's. Overweight, 5.29's. @b3itz is the closest to my build spec with recent experience/posts, but has a manual tranny... I do want to be able to go 75+ mph (as our speed limits in Colorado dictate) with out issues. Super charger is likely in my future, but I need a good tune from @PapaRee for it first! Couple years off probably for that final piece of the build... I would appreciate any thoughts or feedback on this build decision.

 

I have 4:88’s and same size tires as you and KDmax LT.....A/T long bed with topper no armor. I’m at ~2300 rpm at 75 mph. With 5:29’s you’re going to be around 2500rpm at 75mph. I’m happy with 4:88’s but, I’m light. My highway (flat S Texas) mpgs are 16-20 depending on headwind.

.......around 200 rpm difference at 75mph between 4:88’s and 5:29’s. I would lean 5:29’s with the weight you are pulling. Gears are going to make a huge difference for the better!

 

That's good to hear. My gears should be arriving today and I've been worry about choosing 5.29's v.s. 4.88's

 

4.88s if you don't plan on bigger tires.
