last time i did it, i was able to get the back plug without taking the blower off.. so it's not too bad of a job.

Oh wow. Good to know for the plugs. The dealer told me double that for the iridium ones. Does more of a rumble mean louder with the zz coupler?

I'll just add the plugs and s/c oil to my 30k mi interval service with the diff oil and other stuff.

I saw the thread that suggested using two universal joints with a bunch of extensions to reach that rear plug... I ordered another universal joint on the Amazon a couple days ago, so I should be good to tackle that next time we get a sunny day.

 

The rumble is very slight. The spring in the stock coupler absorbs those vibes.
Some years differ, but I just take off the S/C to do the plugs. I've done it without and swapping plugs is much more enjoyable with all the brackets and hoses out of the way. Supposedly some can get at them just fine without. I had two spark plug blow outs in my 97 Tacoma and am paranoid about them not getting torqued.

 

how long does it normally take to take the SC off? do you have to disconnect any of the coolant hoses?

seems like a pain to me, but i keep hearing people say they take it off all the time like it's no big deal...

 

No. U can unbolt the intercooler from top of the sc and place it on the cowl. Remove belt and idler pulleys. Disconnect 2 brackets and then 6 bolts holding the sc to lower intake manifold

takes bout 15-20 mins to remove the sc imo

 

I need to service mine soon and upgrade the coupler... I’m not that far from you.

 

Yep, I like to take a 1/2" non ratcheting socket wrench and release the belt tensioner from the belt. Should be able to squeeze it between the fan blades. Then slide the belt off the S/C pulley and zip tie the belt at the top so it doesn't misalign. Remove the upper two bolts from the pulley bracket that secures the engine to the S/C. Remove the top bolts from the two side mount brackets and loosen the lower two bolts. Remove mounting clamp for coolant lines from top of S/C. Remove the ~12 bolts from the S/C lid and suspend from the hood skeleton with bailing wire. Stuff rags in the 6 intake runners and loosen the captured bolts from the S/C base. Pull S/C up and away from engine.

 

That doesn't sound terrible, but it does sound like a lot more work than using a couple universal joints and extensions to get to the spark plug. Is there a gasket that needs to be replaced when the blower is reinstalled?

 

The access to the #6 cylinder plug varies from model to model. My 08 TRD off road with 6spd is very crowded. The battle to get at that plug is enough to take the effort of easy access.
The orange gasket can be had from URD and others. Some say it has been sucked into their engine after oil wrecks the adhesive, it must be melt friendly. The gasket prevents un-cooled air from bypassing the intercooler and allows hot air in, loss of power. I'd have one on hand to swap if the original is loose. New one has adhesive.

Love your truck! Making me think about an access cab...or would you rather have a four door?

 

depends on what you're using it for... when i get to V2, it will be a DCLB for the extra space and keep the 6ft bed. i don't wheel as hard as i used to, so i am not that concerned about the longer wheelbase anymore and i'd rather have the cab space. 6ft bed is very nice with the camper.

if you don't need the bed space, dcsb is a great option.. if you need the bed space and don't want the wheelbase length, AC is the way to go.

 

A+ explanation. I always appreciated the space in my DCLB, but I used to wheel a lot more and sometimes I regretted going with the longer wheelbase. As the family grows and I get older and more boring I appreciate the DCLB more and more.

What is this "V2"? Are you planning a newer Taco in the future?

 

eventually get a 2015 dclb and transfer everything i can over to it unless i find someone looking to buy a project truck with a bunch of goodies on it already, but i doubt i'd get enough money for it to justify parting with my upgrades. nearing 300k on this truck and the frame has seen better days... only difference i'd do really on V2 would be to skip the S/C.

 

That all makes perfect sense to me, except skipping the S/C. I guess with all of the weight reduction you did with switching over to aluminum you may not need the powah... but isn't it nice to have even if you don't need it?

I'm a big fan of the 2nd gens and the 1GR in particular, but maybe Toyota will have something cool for 4th gen that will still be compatible with most of your parts! A guy can dream.

 

The 1GR with S/C is quite nice here at elevation... sitting in 5th gear in overdrive and cruising uphill on I-70 with a loaded truck at 2100rpm is way better than my 1st gen stuck in 2nd gear struggling to keep 50mph on the same road...

 

I'm not sure if the 2006 would swap over nicely to the 2015, possibly?... but the reliability and maintenance issues would be improved. plus i wouldn't need to run 91 and have more flexibility on road trips. the power is great to have, but not sure it's worth it for what i do.

but that's a part that i could sell that i don't NEED to help fund the new project. same thing with the crawlbox. both great to have, but i don't NEED... unless i transfer my MT over to the DCLB, then i'd keep the crawlbox.

the other option is to get an older DCLB 2nd gen with a good frame and swap in a v8...

 

Just get a 1st gen Tundra. Not worth the hassle of trying to fit a V8 under the hood of a Tacoma.
