Thanks to @ARCHIVE for reaching out to me on a Sunday. We’ve been texting back and forth, and despite the powder flaking off, the HH is apparently fine.

I’ll be repairing the frame and buying a brace to prevent this from happening in the future.

My opinion is the overloaded Tacoma, very easy to overload a Tacoma, I think we all know that now, and he said he has a light trailer as well.
But its just more weight to add stress on the frame.

Good reason for adding our cross tube option, as I have been saying for 3+ years, the cross tube limits stress applied to the frame, plus makes the ride and handling even better

Here's (another) weak spot in the Tacoma's frame design, which I blame for @Naveronski 's frame issue, these windows in the stock cross member that allow the frame bottom flanges to flex.
Across the entire truck market from pickups to Medium and Heavy duty trucks/semis, it's known you bolt hangers to the side of the frame rail where the rail is strongest, only Toyota Tacoma has it bolt to a bottom flange, which is also not well supported.

I remember using the air hammer to remove the rivets and washers after drilling through them on the inside bottom of the frame and it was pulling up that crossmember. I can’t imagine how much that area flexes under hard hits.

I dont even want to see how much mine weighs. Glad i installed crosstube as well. Been debating of cutting stock x crossmember out and fabricating a beefed up one. Maybe a future project fro @ARCHIVE :boink::spending:

Might have to look into the cross tube. Finished up my HH install yesterday and so far the on-road ride is AMAZING. Perfect complement to my Dakars and Fox shocks...the truck floats over everything now. Can't wait to get it off pavement.

    Couple of questions...
    1) I forgot to swap out one of my shackle/spring bolts (not the shackle/hanger bolt)...is it ok to run the OEM bolt here until the next time my leafs have to come out for something and I can swap the bolt for the Archive one?
    2) @ARCHIVE -- are your shackles for sale separately from the hangers?

Im running between 6,800 to 7,200 lbs and had considered boxing the rear frame. But after discussing it with Scott at Aiden James Customs, none of my frame is in fact boxed, so boxing the rear portion would just create a weak spot where the boxing ended. Besides the prep time would have been very expensive

    Whole lotta stuff
Yes, the whole tacoma frame is a c-channel. However, the reason most people box frame in the rear is because there is very little besides the bed, and the stock cross-member bracing both sides. The front and middle portion of the frame have more cross-members between the engine, trans, T-case, and carrier bearing. So as long as you're ending the frame boxing close to the carrier bearing cross-member, you aren't creating a weak spot, you're strengthening an area that was already weak from the factory for heavy applications. Tis why most of the LT guys have boxed their frames in addition to adding bed cages. An alternative to the frame boxing would be adding you're own cross member(s) near or upstream from the stock spare tire location, however that kind of solution is going to come in heavier or just as heavy as adding frame boxing plates (and there is a drive shaft to worry about hitting).

Both ways are a pain. But in your case with the camper, depending on how much wheeling or bumps you hit, those might be options you want to reconsider since your truck is going to be under constant weight on and off-road.

Thanks! We definitely don’t seek out wheeling but after 20,000 miles of backcountry exploring, rough roads/ potholes are inevitable. I probably have build fatigue and just am ready to ship it overseas

I also take issue with a frame only boxed at the rear, but I understand it helps the rear frame not bend at bumpstop landing or hangers, just that is pretty much all its going to do more than say the Hh cross tube option.

I would like to see you get our cross tube option under your truck with that weight, but I understand the spare tire issue on the camper
