Fair enough - for me though, I'll just do it all in one. My simple A to B mover just just without the topper on the truck, still use the same mount/system. If I have to have a setup to have it held under the topper, why not also use it for simple A to B moves too :notsure: everyone has their own best ways.

@R4D4G4ST do you have any more details or a zoom in for that thing? That's awesome, looks like what I want to do! I have a front rail coming in probably this week. That'll at least hold me over instead of just chucking it in the bed. But that looks great. Seen a few similar to that using 2x6 etc to get there. Just curious on yours. And @cartter469 looks like a setup like this would be nice and compact

I hear what you're saying, but I left my tailgate pad on for two continuous years, SLC winters and all, before I bought a oneup, with only the occasional wash, and saw no issues with paint degradation, etc.

The concern about downtube damage, esp on 3rd gens with the fatter tailgate lip is a concern, but seem to be a non-issue on a 2nd gen.

If @honda50r can't see the maxtrax, they can't hurt him :D Mine get well used for a different hobby of mine though.

Yeah I use soft pvc foam between frame and pad. Frame is also wrapped too so... I treat it like trash. :)

yea, my "best way" involves not having to remove a wheel which, especially with a thru-axle, can be inconvenient, and then attaching it to the rack, and then reversing it all at the trailhead, and then again after the ride.

Its so nice to be able to just pick up the bike, set it on the tailgate, and know its pretty much not going anywhere, even without tying it down, and like most people have said, the "damage/wear" is a non-issue.

Which on the factory fox 36 is a PITA because of the Kabolt-x pinch bolt.

I'll admit I don't know what that means exactly. lol

but for me, the biggest issue is getting the axle lined up again and threading it back into the fork. Having to hold the bike up and in place until I the axle threads catch is annoying as hell to me.

The Factory 36 uses a non-qr thru-axle and then adds a pinch collar you use to cinch it all up. Which means you have to loosen a bolt just so you can loosen the axle bolt. And no, of course they aren't the same size hex.

oh jeez. I would definitely NOT be using any system that involves taking the wheel off. what a PITA, indeed.

Same size bolt for the thru-axle and pinchbolt on the 2021 36 forks. 6mm I believe. Still, I’d rather have a QR.

Its been a while since I took it off, so I was second guessing after I said that. Either way, I dont enjoy taking it off, even for a flat, etc.

Same boat for me. For my normal everyday after work or weekend rides literally nothing is better than a tailgate pad. Having to remove a wheel and mount on a rack is nothing like a perfect rack for my needs. The tailgate pad bike carry has been my absolute favorite thing about having a truck. I'm fine using racks and whatever for longer trips, camping, etc, but you can't convince me there is a better after work ride carry method than a tailgate pad.

One up most of the time, I sometimes throw the pad on if I use the rack on another car. Both are easy enough, even with the RTT and mid height rack.

Tailgate pads absolutely serve a purpose. I've had a bunch of them, and I think I like the EVOC the most. So I do use them a fair bit. Nothing beats how easy they are or the ability to easily carry multiple bikes. But I'm too persnickity about everything to enjoy using them day to day. I keep everything super clean and removing the tailgate pad every time I wanted to wash the truck, I think, is more of PITA than removing the front wheel. (but I don't have Factory 36 fork either).

I've also noticed that bikes were significantly more stable on the Gen IIs with the flat tailgate. The lipped tailgate on the Gen III causes the bikes tip and roll on the tailgate way worse, which magnifies and focuses rubbage onto a smaller point on the fork tube. And I can't fit in the garage with my bikes on the pad, so after a long ride I had to unload before I could park and go take a shower and enjoy a cold beer. Both bikes are sitting in the rack, in the garage at this very moment, actually.

    So....

I ordered the "mini stiffys" from a guy on here, then it's just a scrap of aluminum tube and some scraps of aluminum angle, and few slots/holes, some Rivnuts and a set of Rocky Mounts (which I already had). Then I worked with @TMCmakes to build the things that hold the wheels against the bed rails, because wheels bouncing around was not ideal. I think he's planning on making a batch to sell.

My goal was I wanted to get the bikes in/out without having to climb in the bed, park in the garage with the bikes stowed, the bikes/wheels had to be stable and not bounce around even on long-fast washboardy roads (like shuttling Mag 7 in Moab), it needed to be able to accommodate a Fat bikes 150mm axle, as well as Boost 115mm and my wifes 100mm. And I wanted it to be easy to remove for when the truck does more traditional stuff. So the whole thing comes out with two allen-head bolts.

    Pic overload;

I think it was just an SX, I wanna say it had like 100mm of travel. Just a straight up slopestyle bike haha. I want to say it was supposedly one of Darren Berrecloth's old bikes that made its way around pinkbike.

Yea slope bikes are cool. Was riding with a guy with one of the new Polygon ones yesterday. I have a CC helm on the way for my P3 but its going to be kind of a goofy setup, might just bite the bullet and build a slope bike instead.

So much ^This. As inconvenient as removing/installing the front wheels can be, being able to just drive in and park inside the garage is worth it. It wasn't until a older lady, at a local bike path, pulled up and loaded her bike onto her Fiat 500 roof rack in less time than it took me to unload and install the wheel on just two of mine. :pout:

I'd like to run a hitch mount rack, but maaaan that'll be a long ride. DCLB + 4bikes.
