37’s... Anyone crazy enough?

I find myself on these threads quite often. Funny enough this truck was supposed to be a fun DD/weekend camping truck. Now I’ve got dents, armor, and daydreaming about 37s

 

Got the tires. Ridge Grapplers, not Terra. Wheels should be here in a few days.

 

I had ridge graps for a bit on my truck. If you drive on the road a lot they are one of my favorite tires. Wont be as good off road as a MT, but will be better than any AT out there

 

I’m coming from the KM3 and they were killer off road. But my truck is now in an overland phase (wife and I are living out of it for a few years while traveling the country) so I wanted something that might be better on the road but still decent off road. I also wanted a “tall” 37 and apparently the Nitto is that (36.8”?). Glad to hear you liked them on road.

I know moving to 37s is probably not a smart move for ~100,000 miles of traveling across North America, but I like sketchy shenanigans.

I’m not too worried about the IFS because I plan to SAS next year. The 5.29s will do well with the 37s and my steering rack is already shot but I have some poly bushings to put in, which might help.

Also, with the move to 37s comes moving to 17” wheels, up from 16s, so I’ll finally be able to put bigger brakes on my disgustingly overweight Tacoma.

 

Yeah bfg tires run tiny. A 35x12.5R17 bfg usually wont measure over 34" and a 37 wont measure over 36. In terms of the steering rack, if the rack itself is shot, the bushings wont help you. If the bushings are what is shot, it would help, but if the rack has any play, I wouldn't think it would be worth it to go through all of that trouble to get the rack out and replace the bushings. If you are driving thousands of miles per year, and doing any sort of serious off roading with the 37s, I would recommend just carrying a bunch of inner tie rods. You wont necessarily bend a lot of them, but you will get play fairly regularly. At this point I can probably jack the truck up, swap an inner, and get it rolling again in 20ish minutes. You'll get pretty good at swapping them and CVs with this set up. Especially with how heavy your truck is

 

I meant to say the bushings are shot. The rack is probably going to die next year though, lol.

Tie rods and CVs are a specialty of mine as well. My CVs actually last a lot longer than I expect them to but tie rods are definitely a somewhat frequent thing.

I’m assuming I might have one of — if not the most, heaviest Tacomas right now.

I’m glad I can finally put the Tundra brakes in with the 17s. Is this the strongest upgrade or do you guys use something else for big brakes?

 

This crappy Photoshop is probably closer to 38-40s but I can’t wait to see the actual stance of the truck.

 

You got a link to where I can purchase replacement tie rods and cv's? I tried looking before and couldn't figure out exactly what all I needed to buy for the cv part.

 

I don’t have a link - I buy them at the dealer. I don’t really want heavier duty CVs because I don’t want them to be so strong that instead of breaking, the gears in the diff break. I’d rather let the CV break.

I did try to upgrade tie rods but I read a lot of bad reviews about the various aftermarket options so I gave up.

If you want OEM, they sometimes have them on Amazon, or you can go to a dealer and have them print you out the parts diagram.

 

Are you going with the black rhino wheels? They look great but that setup was heavy AF.

 

Negative. Those are the wheels I have now with the 35s. But they are 16s (and heavy) and I’m moving to 17s. I was looking to get steelie-style 17s but I ended up with something else. They should be here in a day or two and pictures will follow.

 

Delivery on the wheels said Wednesday but I had a surprise at my door this morning, so the 37s should be mounted tomorrow. I guess I’ll spend today sharpening the saws.

 

Tires are on. Truck is cut enough to have been able to drive around town. Cutting will resume tomorrow. Note: The passenger side rear air bag had no air in it in the photo so the driver side photo is a better representation of how it sits.

 

If you ever decide to give away that 4wc fleet to a good home, I know a big red ford that it would look great in

I forgot to take photos of the cutting process but I’ll have them tomorrow.

For now, here’s the only photo I did get at the beginning. This cut ended up looking pretty nice once I finally figured out how deep it really needed to be. I did already have a deep CMC from the 35s but I basically cut it off down to the bolt. That wasn’t enough so I kept cutting. And I cut some of the fender but it doesn’t really rub the fender.

I have to do some more cutting and finishing tomorrow. That’s when I’ll take more pictures. But I’m also going to relocate the mount and tub the fender.

 

Which UCA's do you have?

 

SPC. They’re old and abused. Almost 3 years I think. Still solid.

 

I'm trying to figure out what the best config is on the spc to move my wheel forward more. Do you know where yours are set to?

 

Are you planning on pulling the coilover and bump stop out to cut to fit at full bump?
