Because driving is an experience. MT adds to that experience.

Some would like to experience as little as possible. It is just too stressful. :)

What if the gearshift lever happens to just break clean off!! - what do you do then, eh??? - you are stuffed!

I had a shift rod connector break one time, only had 3rd and 5th gears but was able to drive it home.

Just to clarify, this isn't completely true. S mode simply caps the top gear the transmission can be allowed to shift into. If you put it into S4, you're not locking it into 4th gear, you're telling the transmission it can shift from 1st to 4th, but you're locking out 5th and 6th. This doesn't change your point when applied to the example you're responding to, but I still do think it's an important distinction.

The problem is it defaults to S4, when I'd really like to go from 6th to 5th ahead of a hill, pain in the dick. I have read some people (and I do it myself a lot too on varied terrain highway trips) leave it in S5 all the time. 5th is still an overdrive gear at a good ratio for driving in hilly highway sections and flats, and doesn't try to hunt to 4th all the time from 6th. That's the gear hunting - dropping out of an overdrive gear into 4th, then back up to the tall 6th ASAP, then back out of overdrive when it needs powahhh

Yep, and that's where the distinction between putting the transmission in a gear and putting the transmission into S mode becomes significant. I am not inconvenienced by climbing a most hills in 4th gear at 40 MPH in my MT, but with an auto in drive it would slow down to about 35 MPH, then drop to 3rd, accelerate to 45, shift back into 6th (I don't know why I'm using cruise at 40 mph in this example, but I am). Putting it into S4 may reduce the gear hunting as you're not going up into those overdrive gears at 40 mph, but I'd wager it's still kicking you down to third pretty frequently.

Thanks. It is VERY important to point out when someone misspells a word on the Internet in a forum. Thank you for performing your civic duty appropriately. I'll go flog myself.

Clearly you have a stick up your ass. Instead of having a laugh, your anus started bleeding. Might want to get that checked out.

Maybe! I've seen all sorts of posts with misspelled words. I don't point them out to the poster. But hey, if that's your thing then knock yourself out there, sport. Have a great day kiddo.

3rd gear would have been an interesting take off, but possible for sure.

The reverse in my Civic just stopped working. I was in my early 20s so broke of course, so i drove like that for about 8 months haha! I had to plan where i was gonna park, honestly it wasnt that bad at all.

My Supra's original trans stopped going into 2nd at one point so I was constantly 1st to 3rd. Eventually 3rd went as well, so I was 1st to 4th. Man I do not miss that. The previous owner(s) must have savagely abused that poor R154.

Fortunate college kid - I had the money to pay for a Supra, but not enough money to repair it.

Yeah my house was up this steep little street that l would usually go up in 1st gear, had to fly up in 3rd. Was able to temporarily repair it until l got a new piece for it.

You get used to it. I like manual transmission because I feel I can have more control over my vehicle, plus its really fun. The added benefit is that some thieves out there don't know how to drive a manual so its a bit of a safety feature as well. But mostly is for the control of the truck. Manual Landcruisers are super fun to drive I had a 2008 90 series.
