Can someone please shed some light on this for me?

I bought a thousand rounds of 7.62x39 for my wasr10. I bought steel cased hollow points. When I went to my range, it stuck to the magnet and they wanted to break open a round to see if it was steel core. It ended up not being a problem because a manager came up and said the ammo was fine since it was hollow point. It worked out fine, but I got pretty nervous thinking I just bought a thousand rounds that I couldn't put down range.

Does FMJ equate to Steel Case? Does Steel Case mean Steel Core?

I like it. It's got a pretty mean kick but its a good gun for the money. I know a lot of people on here are more for AR's, but it's more than I wanted to spend, it's durable, fun, and chances are I won't need to make long distance shots that my life depends on on a daily basis.

Steel case normally means the case is steel in stead of brass, not the bullet. What brand did you buy? And FMJ just means the core is encased in a "one piece" metal jacket. It has no designation for the metal material.

Good info, thanks. I bought some Russian Brown Bear. It was pretty cheap considering the quantity I got. I've gone through about 300-400 rounds so far and haven't had any jams or ftf's.

Ah, Russian ammo. Same as Wolf pretty much. It's the cases that are steel. It's why they're painted green. Do not reload the cases.

The steel case is/was cheaper than brass. Steel case ammo is not meant to be reloaded (hard on dies, harder to re-form and size, and often the primer is not replaceable). I've done it just out of curiosity, but it's not meant to be.

The case necks often split also. Usually after the first shot with new ammo.

I'm not worried about reloading the cases. The ammo is cheap enough to just buy more and I'm not proficient enough with ammunition to take that task on anyway.

I'm guessing because of reclaiming the brass. It would take a lot time to sort that stuff.

    Steel core is armor piercing.

Some ranges don't allow it for liability reasons.

FMJ = full metal jacket. The bullet core (either lead or steel) is encased in a copper jacket to glide down the barrel easier.

Some ranges don't allow steel core bullets because they are harder on the backstops.

FMJ and hollowpoint (abbreviated JHP) are mutually exclusive. A hollowpoint bullet by definition cannot be steel core because there is no core.

Couldn't they just use a magnet to remove the steel cases?

Yes, but then they are left with a shit ton of steel to get rid of. Granted they could recycle it with the brass but it doesn't pay for the effort.
