Back in November I got a new engine installed, after that, the trans wouldn't go into 5th, and it wouldn't downshift properly(sometimes). Sometimes it works normal when I shift 123, 321,123,321 then 1-5, (it is a 5 speed auto by the way)and after that rarely does it malfunction, but if I can't do a sequence like that, then it will only go into 4th, and it won't let me downshift at the same normal speeds or rpms. There is no code for this so that's why it's so confusing

How is the fluid level in the transmission?

Lots of relatively small ports in a tranny. Obviously yours isn't new. I’d drain the fluid and replace it and the filter again. Sometimes stuff just gums up and a good flush can make all the difference.

Maybe I'll give it a try, never hurts, just weird how it started occurring as soon as the new motor was in

Not really. I’ve seen stuff like that in all sorts of equipment. You replace one thing and you jiggle another part and it acts up. Parts run-in in relationship to one another. Change the relationship and parts have sort of settle back in.

Changed fluid and filter and I'm still having the same problem. I can't imagine I'm the first person this has happened to

Is it possible that the transmission shift cable got tweaked and is a little out of adjustment?

There is no "kick down cable". That was Old school for non-electrically controlled transmissions.

Forgot about this thread, fixed the problem last summer. It was actually due to the used motor a shop put in. The used motor had its knock sensor harness chewed through by rats, and I guess when that code is thrown it confuses the ecu or something, but problem has been gone ever since

I've had similar transmission issues caused because mice chewed insulation off wires. When they were shorting the transmission did all sorts of crazy things. If they were in a position where they didn't short everything worked perfectly. On one vehicle it cost several hundred to get a new wiring harness. The other time a little shrink wrap on the wire fixed the problem.

It happened another time to my Honda Foreman. We were able to repair each of those wires individually. It took a while, but Honda wanted $1200 for a new harness and to install it.
