Finally got the tent setup. I got low bed bars although gotta bend up a new solution for the front window flap as currently the rod can't be installed on the driver side due to hitting the cab. Also gonna need to beef up the rear.

Had one of the window flap rods slip out and whack my forehead. That woke me up.

I used a dremel. Marked lines at designated measuring points that followed the curves I wanted. Measured about 20 times and sat there drinking a beer looking at the lines until I went for it.

 

I’ll be working on installing this weekend. Going to fit the mic plug in one of the blank switches I have under the A/C controls. I’ll make sure to post up when I finish it. It’s the midland 275, I also got a antenna mount from caliraised that mounts to the bed.

In 2019 I was lucky enough to catch the WWII planes at my local airport, Groton, CT. Since it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity I took the flight on the B-17 after telling my wife that my life insurance was paid up. Little did I know that same plane would be lost in a fiery crash at Bradley International Airport about 3 weeks later taking 8 lives. It was an event I'll never forget.

It measured out at 2 1/2”, little taller than I wanted. Going to see if things settle and I’ll decide whether or not to take the top plate out. I also want to see how much more the rear squats with settling and the CBI.

Yes, you are a lucky one. These aircraft were not built for safety - 80 years ago.... Thrill seekers and nostalgia buffs are not told the truth about the chance they take riding on one these museum pieces. My father declined an invite by a friend, and this friend was 15 minutes late for this very flight. I worked with one of the fatalities. I heard the AC struggling overhead from my desk. A real tragedy.

Aside from the Merlin I'm not too impressed with much of the technology of the day. For me it's like going for a joy ride in the back of a Model T (in rush hour traffic).

 

Agreed. The Merlin was a hell of an engine for its time.

 

A little late to the conversation, but there is another air show that covers this era through the current aircraft. It is sponsored by the Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run Airport in Michigan. They generally have a large draw of WW2 aircraft as there was a hanger there for the museum until it and some aircraft were destroyed by fire. It runs in August every year.

And when they put the Merlin engine in the P51 Mustang that made two technological marvels of the day and helped to win the war in the air.

 

Not too impressed, Huh. You do realize that at that time, we went from 1938(when the first B-17 was introduced) model-A depression tech, to jet propulsion and atomic energy.... during a war. They were also built in factories that were not designed to build aircraft.

R&D was fast a furious and we didn't have a lot of time to develop things to their fullest before pressing them into service.
We are still riding on the shoulders of those who developed our tech in that era. Everything we have today, including computers and cell phones and space exploration can trace its development back to those "unimpressive" days.

I'd say that aircraft that flew in combat 80 years ago and is still around for us to appreciate today deserves a bit more respect.
Just my opinion.

 

They do limit it to like 1 every 6 months or something like that, but that's still fair. When I need new tires I might end up doing it through them with that, I'm not gentle off road so I could probably do with 1/year.
