So I'm looking into getting a new rifle. I've been considering the PS90 even though its pretty expensive (1700) here with the 50 rd mags. I think the 5.7 is a pretty wild round, and the PS90 is a pretty good close quarter weapon.

I've been looking into other rifles as well such as the scar mk17, hk416 (can we even buy these?) and maybe even another ar with some mods.

I'd like to stay under 2000 but would spend a little more for something nice. What would you guys recommend? I'm primarily wanting something decent all around and somewhat rugged.

    Thanks guys

If you already have an ar why not get a new upper. There are so many options you could even get a shorty 8 in barrel for less than 2k with the FFL

I have an 11.5 inch barrel, I wouldn't want anything shorter on an ar

check out ableammo.com and search by caliber. They have some pretty sick rifles up there. I know they have the scar up there, I don't know about the 416's though. They have some fn2000's and steyr augs too.

What do you want this rifle to do?...or should I just spout my favorite, like everybody else?

HK416 is military and LE-only at the point. HK has the MR556A1 semiauto version coming out in "early 2011" with an SRP of $3000: http://www.hk-usa.com/civilian_products/mr556_general.asp

IMO if you want an AR15-pattern gas piston rifle, you are better off getting a POF P415: http://www.pof-usa.com/p415/p415-14-11sx-223.htm The POF can be ordered with a 14.5" barrel that stays legal with a permanent flash hider. $2000 at Cabela's.

Another option is the FN FS2000 bullpup, packs a 17" barrel in 29" total length. $2200 at ImpactGuns

Thanks for all the feedback and recommendations. Has anyone tried any 6.8 rifles/carbines?

I'd take a look at the Robinson XCR. Modular and can be converted to differetn calibers. Built like an AK so its bolt is much, nuch stronger than the Stoner bolt system in the AR.

Would recommend sticking to standard calibers .223 Rem or .308 Win. When shit hits the fan (LA riots, Katrina...) you want to be able to raid the local Wal-Mart and find suitable ammo.

I think I'm going to go with the 6.5 grendel. The great thing about ar's is they can be modified to any caliber so really you can't go wrong.

    This is not true.
The lower on an AR15 is not compatible with that many cartridges.
7.62x51 NATO requires an AR10 lower.
    This is just one example.

Anything from LWRC is worth the money if you can swing it. They are pricey but WORTH IT! Good customer service too.

I've been looking at FN's FS2000- I'm not sure SCARs or HK416's are even on the market yet, though I may be wrong. Ever considered some .308 rifles?

I had a discussion with a few of my shooting friends a few years ago (including a gun-shop owner) and they talked me out of buying a PS90 just because of the ammo...Since FN is the only one that makes the 5.7, not only is it pretty hard to find, but market price can skyrocket at nothing but a whim...And if you're a P/S90 owner you HAVE to still buy from them. (cause who whould have a p90 just sit in the closet?!) but that's just my 2 cents...

I dislike the 7.62 round for an "assault" rifle.

5.7 isn't hard to find, at least here and costs the same as 223. It is a really slick gun. I've never seen anything quite like it besides the the f2000. Check this upper out

and as for converting the 7.62 to the ar15

ah, sorry forgot that the discussion was about the local supply... Cause ALL ammo besides shotgun rounds are hard to come by in Hawaii.(esp. on the Big Island) :/
I've never seen that kind of upper before...and it makes me want one! Amazing what one can do to the AR platform nowdays
