When I got my 2012 model back in 2015, it seemed very sluggish to me. I took it to several Toyota shops, until I got go the right place ; the mechanic there reset the automatic transmission computer, and yes, there was an improvement. Something I notice in these trucks is that are very sensitive to several factors, the battery for example; in the last change I got a higher Amp Duralast battery, and you could feel the difference... A bit more engine power.

After all these years, I got the truckto a place where the ECU is reprogrammed to have injection mapping improved and remove the speed limit barrier .. And indeed, you can feel the difference

I had a 2014... It started feeling sluggish also. Two months later she spun a crank bearing. 97kon the engine.

My guess without reading all the posts are all the nanny features on the newer ones!
My 08 base 4cyl 5 speed manual would turn the tires at my demand.
It struggled on the interstate etc but shifted when I shifted and didn’t have traction control etc.
I recently purchased a 12 TX pro it is way better on the interstate and has more nut.
But when it comes to playing in snow etc the nanny features shut you down.
It piss’s and moans so much I just avoid doing it!!!

@Jeffch, don't let the nannies ruin your fun. Turn them off.

On my 60 year old forklift with the generator going it it made a stronger spark and got ignition going sooner. As the battery died you could hear the engine sound funny and you would lose a lot of torque.

Push a few buttons in the snow and you have a real vehicle again. Just for fun, I like those nanny features when I’m going 50 in the snow.

No explanations to give Ace96. Don't know the science behind it, and I'm not really interested. It's just like that, and I'm sharing my experience ..

I recommend pedal commander or similar device with several settings to choose from to remap the throttle. The late model 4runner benefits as well from one of these throttle devices. Some are better than others so spend a little money and buy a good quality one.

Umm guessing it didn’t have an ECU being 60 years old.

Gotcha but that is not how engines work. The ol’ butt dyno is not that accurate. If I had to guess it was the ecu relearning.

The electrical system generates the spark. If there’s a problem it could certainly mess things up.

Yeah and it would throw a code.

Well, it’s supposed to do all sorts of things and always gets them right. I have a voltmeter installed and it varies quite a bit without throwing codes. Just how off it can be before triggering I’ve no idea. My last battery died without throwing any codes.

Yes, battery will die without throwing a code. Battery does not increase power to engine. Misfire is a different story.

What about system voltage? At what point does the ecu decide there’s a problem. It’s a program, it does what it’s programmed to. Butt dynos may not be accurate or calibrated but that doesn’t mean they aren’t sensitive.
