Not sure how you think they have more h.p.. Same engine in front of each tranny, and once the torque converter on the auto is locked, its a direct lock up to the engine, much like the clutch on the manual tranny. As far as autos sucking up more h.p. than a stick, my truck dynoed out stock at 205 h.p. to the tires. 3 less than an X Runner with a 6 speed. :)

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
Interesting info Chris......what did they charge you for the dyno run ? I guess they claim 236hp and thats probably at the clutch ,with out any of drag from tranny and rearends.
By the way what was the max your engine got to in the dyno test?

Our company leases the property to the shop, so I can get free runs for the most part. If I have a bunch of things to test, I will pay, and its usually about $20.00 a run for 10 runs. I think they normally charge $100.00 for 3. But Im not sure. By "max." are you talking rpm?I think my truck reved out to 5700 rpm. Peak h.p. was near 5400. The h.p. claim/ rating from manufactures is dont at the crank.

Chris, yep RPM's was what I was looking for as I was just curious at what our V6's are capable of.

Nice thing to have access to that facility. Thanks for the info.

I swear I read somewhere that manuals have more HP than autos, but I could be wrong, but the manual XRunner beat your auto by 3. :p

Years ago it was agreed that overall HP at the rear wheels with a manual shift trans was more than the same engine with a auto, this was due to the resistence or drag with an auto. With todays auto's I am not sure if that is as true as in years ago.
How much difference? I think they were mostly refering to 0-60 times.
Considering Mercedes Benz cars are using 7 spd auto's and there quick shift times have improved a great deal.

In regards to shifting I would love to try out a 6spd with a TRD quick shift kit. Shorter throws certainly would help, drove a vette one time with a short throw kit in it and it was great. Never did find out who produced that.

I personally like the manual. I have a doublecab 6spd trd off-road and enjoy the control of the manual. However, the auto would be easier when off-roading and negotiating some tight spots. Also, when stuck in traffic, the manual can get annoying. Things to consider, but I'd still get the 6spd if I had to go back.

Manuals are more fun to drive, but the auto is the way to go for trailering. Much easier to use when backing in, manuvering trailers in tight spots, boat ramps, etc.
Owned sticks till 01 when I lived in Houston, fought traffic, and used trailers daily for construction, hated the manual tranny with trailer, pulling into dump sites.

Bingo. As I was going through this thread reading the various responses I was thinking about something that Jeff said, how driving a manual makes it harder to talk on the phone, drink coffee, eat bean burritos, fiddly-fart with yer Ipod, or, biggest abomination of all IMHO, send text messages while trying to drive. I also grew up in the 50s and 60s and don't think I'm one of those old geezers who thinks that things were necessarily better back then.....I suppose that in some ways they were and in some they weren't. But driving with a manual takes more effort and, because of that, is more likely to cause a driver to be engaged with the act of driving and less likely to be reading a book or trying to email someone. My .02 worth.

I've just always preferred driving a manual. I feel like I have more control over my vehicle. Automatics just want to go, and you've got your foot on the brake pedal all the time, which really drives me nuts driving behind people driving automatics. At least with a manual, you have some control by downshifting, and wind up using your brakes less. I've also found that driving the manual in slow moving traffic is a piece of cake. I just give myself plenty of distance and let the thing idle, and keep a constant speed, so that I'm not riding up on the bumper of the car in front of me. Plus, I live in the mountains, and I've never driven an automatic around here that handled shifting on the passes very well... It's so much nicer to have a manual for the steep grades.
