I was told that it's the rail guides on the timing chain. No big deal.

Most have found the source of the tick to be from the PWM-vacuum switching valve. An easy fix to help calm the tick.

I have a 2011 V6 Tacoma with just over 2800 miles. I cannot hear any ticking at idle or at any speed. Not even when accelerating. I rode in a 2007 a few months ago and the ticking was very noticeable.

I hate to say it but yeah, Im certain they all tick, at least both of my 2nd gens have. At this point, after reading all the threads on this topic, im just gonna go ahead and deal with it via the loud radio method!! I dont like it, but since I know the motor isnt self destructing every tick it takes, i'll live with it......

With all the respect to you my friend, I say power to you if turning up the radio is your solution. I started a poll about this subject and will not stop until I get satisfaction. A $30,000 vehicle be it a Cadilac or Tacoma should not have a tick like mine does. Here's my thread if you care to read more on it. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/120465-poll-does-your-tacoma-tick-7.html

And here is my post in that thread that tell you why I'm not happy.

I suppose that all depends on ones interpretation of normal. As of this writing, there have been 4,028 visits to this poll. And only 369 votes and you can scroll up to the top and look at the results. However, my point in starting this poll was to determine what percentage of Tacoma's tick. I now realize this is not exactly a scientific poll because it depends on user desire to participate. Think about it!!! If you Tacoma does not tick, you'd likely have little to no interest in reading let alone participating in the poll. I understand some of the 4,028 visits may be repeat visits but I'm wondering how many Tacoma owners that don't have the tick who didn't even visit this poll. I have been asking around from family, the office, on the streets as the opportunity presents itself and even count the ones I test drove before buying and getting stuck with a loose valve tolerance that aggravates the hell out of me and my personal results are more like 50% of the Tacoma's don't tick.
If you really look at the results of this poll and give the odds of non-tickers posting up, I think there is a basis for my chiming in and writing this post.
Before the defenders advise again that they all tick and if yours does not, you just can't hear it…. Or you love the tick… Or just drown the tick with the radio or a high performance exhaust. I say this… What is normal vs. what is excessive ??
Sure, every combustion engine makes noise. I can stand next to an engine and tell you if it is running or not. They all make noise. The question here is what is excessive. I can say in my book, My Tacoma ticks louder than normal and I don't like it. I want on of the many quiet ones I've heard out there.
I'm also ticked off (pun intended) at the dealer. When I special ordered and then picked it up. I had never heard of the "Tacoma Tick" and had complained about the valve train noise… The salesman told me to give it 1k miles to break in and he thought it would stop.
PS. I still have right at 1k miles and would love to sell it. See post number 51 and 53 if you need pictures. It's a 2011 double cab 2x4 with sport package and most options.

Man Your truck sounds bad (from the youtube video) I would seriously press dealer to have a look at this. When my truck runs you can barely hear the engine. Actually Belt makes most of the noise. so its more like humm or wooosh sound. Yours sound like Diesel running.

    Thanks for your support BlueT,

I hope to get some sort of resolution. I'm working on it.
Here's the link if anyone else wants to hear it. The first couple of seconds of the video, I had my hand on the microphone. You can see me moving it to free up the mic.

I have an '09 tacoma that makes the same tick as everyone else's. I have noticed that the tick diminishes a little when running 89 octane, also after a fresh oil change. I've put 35,000 miles on my truck in the past 1 3/4 years, tick has been the same since the day I bought it. Frustrating indeed...

I bought my Tacoma in October and it has ticked under acceleration from day one. I will be pushing the dealer to resolve the issue.

    Hey 66GTA,

Toyota encouraged me to encourage others to report the ticking problem via TOYOTA - 1-800-331-4331 - Customer service.

Open a ticket and ask for a case manager to assist you with a resolution.

Please do it... Toyota needs to know how big this problem is.

I just purchased a brand new 2011 Toyota Tacoma TRD and it ticks. I was extremely concerned about this ticking noise, this is how I found this forum. In reading many different forums and columns on the internet this seems to be a very common problem. Is this something that should concern me? Is this the way a Toyota truck motor sounds?
The ticking sound is at idle and low acceleration.
You will have to forgive me for my ignorance as this is the first Toyota and the first truck that I have ever owned.
If I didn't purchase this truck brand new I would be terrified!

Does anyone else notice that the folks that are complaining the most about the "ticking" have the youngest TW memberships, while the people who are saying "The ticking is normal" have been on TW much longer?

    Probably a coincidence.

Last time I checked people don't stick around to talk shit about it. I am glad you moved on no need to talk trash about it.

Yea, I have that ticking noise. Can hardly hear it with my exhaust and my CAI. Only time I hear it is if I am besides a wall. Wasn't there a fix for dampening the ticking noise? I think it was from Chris with the rubber washers.
