Suction line and compressor replacement

Hilights:

Meager measurable amount found in hose.

This job turned out to be surprisingly easy and forgiving.

The replacements perform and operate exactly like OEM. No better. No worse.
A/C is very cold and has been perfectly stable over the course of 10 days.
No other parts replaced. I broke a plastic clasp securing suction hose to firewall with a screw driver. The redundant tab however holds the line securely with no play at all.
Two cans of Artic Freeze kit used. Each can contains 10 oz of refrigerant. Each contain 2 oz of additives: UV dye and sealer.

A 14 millimeter socket was used with a Harbor Freight serpentine belt removal tool. The cool part is that once you have strategically placed the socket with an "inch extension" onto the belt tensioner bolt below the pulley, you can rotate it clockwise while walking over to the compressor and remove the belt just from the compressor itself.

To mount the new compressor, I used a long nail and placed it through the upper right mounting hole of the unit (where the bolt should be) and into the mount on the engine block. This saves my energy so I can take my time in order to place the first bolt in, find and align where it needs to go. After other bolts are in, I remove the nail and install the final bolt. Done.

I did not spit in or suction the system. I trust the desiccant dryer previously installed in the condenser is of sufficient quantity and will remove any humidity that my repair has caused.

Once the belt is back on, I remove the tensioner tool and crank the engine 1/2 turn without starting it to be sure the serpentine belt is aligned properly. It was not. I spent some more time with it and we have working A/C.

The compressor was not cycling on and off and in the sun, I was uncomfortable. The air is cold from all vents and I remembered I installed 20 oz of refrigerant. The Artic Freeze reusable hose with gauge screwed onto a 134-A can of pure refrigerant from Walmart. Gauge was useless, if not confusing.. but I added about 3 more oz of refrigerant with the reusable hose with alot to spare.

A/C is painfully cold again and the compressor cycles exactly as it did before when truck was new.
Refrigerant used: 23 oz

ML-897 oil compatibility with what is installed in the new compressor PAG 46, was strangely confirmed on a Chevy website. I cannot afford to worry needlessly anymore. My days are numbered and Bree and her truck are cool.

I am blessed and thankful to learn that the repair is working wonderfully and wee dog Bree ... she breathes so easy and peaceful again.

Note: The suction line sweats and drips water near the evaporator firewall and with the evaporator drain hose..this is the puddle you see under your Tacoma.

The condenser suction line also creates water drips across the breadth of the truck underneath the radiator. Without the bottom plate installed, you will see water puddles in this area as well.

The truck blew up and burned to the ground. If there was no air in the ac system, and it was vacuumed properly, Bree and I would not be ghosts anymore.

Thankfully, our grandmother saw us looking into the poltergeist light and brought both of us safely back to earth. I don't understand why we are amongst the living of truly gifted people again. Finally, I can now answer your question since she also restored the truck.

You are correct.

No vacuum is applied.
No thread lock used for bolts.
Bolts not torqued to specification.
No thermal expansion valve replacement.
No filter ahead of thermal expansion valve replaced.
No condenser replaced.
No filter/dryer replaced.
No broken clasp replaced.

My confidence in training my hands and muscles for a repair takes several days. Then my confidence increases as my coordination is honed for each part of a repair task. This took me three weeks to complete. I am happy and over it.

I also am in training with my diaphram, lips, lungs and tongue.

Once I learn to suck and apply vacuum for 40 minutes, I will lean over the truck bumper and perform the vaccum manually on the evaporator port.

We don't know you from a hole in the wall. We do however know that missing, not doing that one very important step will cause you grief later.

Your post count suggests that you're a new member. You've been on the site since 2017 though. In that time you haven't figured out that you need a relatively thick skin here? I learned that my first day with all the reading I've done here.

Yes. Finally Toyota recognized the connector problem and made their blower motor resistor beefier.

His A/C will work short term. But without the moisture boiled off by vacuum, I think everything will start corroding and he will chase down leaks.

I think he is getting freezing temps because the moisture is freezing in his system.

But yeah the OP talks all weird and he is off his rocker.

 

There is a tool that is made, toy211 that allows you to undo the suction line connector without damaging it like I have.

Of course there is ice and mayhem in my ac system. It is working wonderfully, sonehow.. Scientiffically, a vacuum .makes sensw. Vacuuming a pipe for 40 minutes and envisioning someone manually applying this ...exactly, I have to wonder, ,exactly what are you are seeing happening in there? I see nothing.. But then again, I am not blessed with sixth sense or enhanced vision. Look at me and tell me what I had for dinner tonight. Otherwise how can you prove I hav ice and mayhem going on all up in there?

Could you please, please,, please look at my rear wheels. I was going to change out my shoes..but I had to take them back due to money issues. Then my AC went wonky again, with refrigerant leaking out.

I am sorry to say that I am no longer a Toyota fan. All of this climate control mess should have been recalled and fixed for free.
Instead,I had to fix it pronto, as usual, for wee dog Bree. Plain and simple, "We love that it is fixed again without having to replace perfectly good parts."

I enjoyed your company and if feeling agitated, eat 3 meals a day and drink plenty of fluids. We like to be funny but how could you know that. Keep your life simple and it will be easier to laugh like we are doing now in our cool Tacoma.
