Does CAI and Cat-BaCK Exhaust Help?

Thanks also for the pm's regarding tuning. I'm gonna go for the KDMax tune!

    New question...
Did some reading today and concerned over CAI and catback exhaust. I was going to do both, AFE and Borla respectively, but it doesn't seem help and mostly, might negatively effect performance. WTF?
So, is the TRD intake and the TRD exhaust a possibility then? I want a little (not a lot) more sound regardless of power gains, but DEFINITELY do not want to lose power/torque.

Or, will KD Max tune maximize AFE/Borla or any other systems? Thoughts?

...if you intend to make a Rice Truck...may as well go with Greddy or 5zigen exhaust and intake systems and have custom tubing made...

Enjoy the noise, won't get any performance gain except a few hp at WOT.
After you choose post your choice because some picks can result in a drone noise at cruising speeds.

I have the Borla and a "poor man's TRD intake", definitely no power loss. Sounds great and the throttle response seemed to improve a bit.

(Poor man's TRD intake includes, air flow accelerator, TRD filter, HPS 57-1600 tube and charcoal filter removed).

A true aftermarket CAI can mess with the tune if it moves the MAF sensor from what I've heard, so I didn't do a full CAI on mine, but swapped the stock filter for a K&N filter and HPS silicone intake tube with the flow accelerator. I felt a little better throttle response from them.

I don't have an exhaust yet, but am planning on the aFe Rebel series. I think it has the best sound out of all the other options.

Just go with trd intake and exhaust. Toyota wouldn't sell parts that would make you lose power.

mrtacoman88, Thanks. Your posts are some I've read already.
I get the "poor man" thing, but is there anything wrong with an out-of-the-box TRD intake if I don't mind the cost?

Anyone else, what the hell is "drone" and what the hell is a "rice truck?":notsure:

Ignore the rice truck stuff, he doesn't know what he's talking about, nor is he gonna help you with your questions.

Drone is where on the highway in overdrive, you can still hear the exhaust. It gets annoying on long road trips where you just hear the exhaust for hours straight.

    Thanks Foster1,
Really don't want to hear "drone"on road trips.
It's so hard for a newbie to figure all this out and sort facts from crap. Leaning hard towards TRD intake and TRD tip for sound and a little more power overall +tune. Waiting to speak with tuner for his opinion on relative effects of tune plus these mods.

Nothing wrong with TRD intake. Im not a fan that it still has a resonator, i want my intake to be loud. Its also pretty pricy in my neck of the woods, like 650$.

Drone is when you are cruising on the highway and cant carry a normal conversation with your passenger or your phone. Borla has none at all at cruising speeds. MBRP are super loud and drone like crazy, i would avoid those. TRD exhaust and Borla are both safe choices IMO.

Rice truck... just guys on TW being guys on TW.

Edit: you can always press the "qoute" button to reply directly to the person.

Don't forget, im in Canada, haha!

If there is a will there is a way. You would need to cut the box off and cover that hole. I wouldn't fuck with it though, its a good quality intake.

I went with the aFe intake because I liked the fact that it sounds more aggressive when you get on the skinny pedal and it has a washable filter. Didn’t give a hang about the claims of power increases but I did notice a difference in throttle response from stock.

how would you rate the Borla on Canadian highways? Loud at cruising speeds (km/hr?) or can you easily yak on the phone and listen to music?

I cant hear it at cruising speeds on flat ground. Only can hear it when driving trough mountain passes when climbing hills.

@Foster1 Unwarranted personal comment-attacks... It's okay bud, I still forgive you. There are absolutely Ricer tiers...Poor and not poor.

OP, just trust your gut feeling. You have been doing enough of your own researching you already have narrowed down your options...you're doing great already.

    Hi all,

I went online and listened to all the exhaust profiles, for what it was, before I bought my set up. I got the MBRP black series. It was just a bit louder than stock, I could hear a bit of drone with windows open. Nothing annoying, or not to be expected since this was what I was looking for.

I added the S&B CAI shortly after. I really don’t care about performance. (Frankly I am trying to figure out why everyone is complaining about the truck. I have a Lexus RX 350 and from a stop I think it would give it a run.) Anyway, once the CAI went on, sound went up about 20 dB. It has a louder drone (still happy). The drone is a deep, almost like having a V8 with a aggressive cam in it. (Muscle car folk know the sound). I floor it thru 3rd and it is a race truck sound. For the 100 miles a month I drive, it makes it fun as heck.

And with each wheel weighing 97 pounds, per UPS shipping, I still think it moves fast? But if I wanted fast I would have gotten the Supra.

    Peace

Lol at no point does a V6 Tacoma sound like a V8 with an aggressive cam. This is hilarious.
