Dobinsons 2016-2023 Taco Suspension Options

I’m on the fence at this point. They ride great but I want to find out if the chipping is an isolated incident. I hope others will reply on how theirs are holding up. I’ve never had coils peel powder coating like these have.

 

Bad paint or not, Dobinsons coils are still the best after my hours of research. OME coils just don't have the same weight capacity and they sag bad even with stock weight up front. It's worth the stiff ride of 700+ pound coils if it doesn't sag after a year. I've seen everyone who got those soft ass OME 887's show an insane amount sag just after a year and they started rubbing everywhere. Even OME 886, the firmest coilspring they make, is only a 660 pound coil, and I've heard the stock ones are 700+ pounds. 3rd gen Tacoma's are a heavy truck

 

Glad you like yours, I liked mine as well until this issue. I would definitely buy another set of the coils or even run it through the warranty process for replacement if this is an isolated issue. I am however not happy that I am even having this issue.

 

OME, like Eibach, offer different length coils so when they do settle you still get the approved ride height. I would be very surprised if Davidson's coils never settled at all.

 

Got part of my order in and installed after work today. Quick shipping for in stock parts and good upfront communication on the back orders parts.

 

Mine are still on backorder, but going with OME 885's or 886's is just going to go against my plan

Curious what the best way to add some extra lift to the rear of my DCSB is? I am looking for an additional 1 - 1.5....is it with blocks? AAL? Anything else?

I already have the Dobinson Medium Load Leaf Pack and Rear Shocks -

Really happy with the ride quality, just need the extra height to match the front of the truck. (Dobinson - 221 with 354 coils - Just installed)

 

If you added some blocks, the ride quality wouldn't change, however you might create driveline vibes as you'd be 3" or more in the rear. The Dobinsons AAL's they came out with last year won't work with the older springs like what you have.

Also new front coils will settle over a month or so, so you might want to wait for things to settle before adjusting anything in the rear.

I own a 2019 SR5 with 40K miles on the clock and just recently purchased and installed a LEER 100XR Shell. At the time I made the purchase of the shell, I wasn't consider the effects this would have on the rear suspension. The springs looked almost flat before the addition of the shell. But the truck did still carry somewhat of a factory rake. I really didn't think that the shell alone would have any real impact on the springs as they sat before the install. But the visual appearance of the truck now is almost flat ( I liked the small rake). I'm still loving the shell. But I'm guessing that adding hardly any more weight to the bed would drive the springs into a negative arch. And I really don't want that. So, it appears that now I have to make some hard decisions about how to turn my truck back into a "truck" again.

My truck is a daily driver and will see quite a few miles weekly. I don't intend on ever lifting my truck or even changing tire sizes. I will probably never see any hard core off-road adventures other than an occasional fire road or trail. I tow light loads occasionally. And will never carry any permanent loads in the bed other than the shell. I don't like the way the rear springs look right now. And I'm concerned that I can't use my truck in a traditional "urban" fashion without having a Bro Lean. I'd rather live with a little more rake and stiffer ride than driving around with a squat every time I need to apply a little weight to the bed. I'm looking to get as close to a bullet-prof resolution as possible. So I've decided to pull the trigger on a full rear suspension upgrade.

I've researched as many options as I can find. And I've finally landed on the Dobinsons Spring #L59-110-R. I'll certainly be purchasing "all" of the supporting gear for this install (Bush Kit, Pin Kit, U-Bolt Kit, Shocks and shackles). And, unfortunately, I'll be required to make the purchase in tow separate installs. My concern is if this is the right spring choice that I want / need for my desired affect. Being that I have no desire to raise the truck. I'm concerned that a 2" lift in the rear my be a little excessive?

I added a 1 inch blocks with my ome Dakar med pack. And roadmaster active suspension to keep the rear height a tad above even with the front. I had no issues

 

'17 OR MT with Dobinsons Spring #L59-111-R with longer 5100 shocks and slightly heavier springs in front.

Would suggest the 111-R and remove a leaf from the pack.

I didn't want any appreciable lift on my truck and typically carry light-med weights but wanted the articulation that the stock leaf springs just didn't provide. They flattened/reversed out after 6 or so months after adding more weight (KTM 500 on hitch rack with camping gear) and ride-rite airbags (no articulation but you can carry weight and any bumps are transferred to the body). Changing to the 111-R with one leaf removed was good with medium weight but they started to go flatter with more weight and lost some articulation. Have now added the removable leaf in prep for a SP camper and I think it will be ok. The truck has a slight rake for now but it is very comfortable at speed over dirt roads and slow easy rock work to camping spots.

All said, I believe that the stock leaves are good for carrying groceries in the bed, that's it. The 110-R may just get you back to stock or slightly better. The 111-R will give you slight lift with one leaf removed, upgradability for more weight capacity, much better articulation over the bumpy stuff and resulting comfort.

I'm finally all set up to install my front and rear MRA's this Saturday, along with Camburg UCAs, Timbren bump stops, and Icon RXT leafs. The struts came with a picture on where to place the reservoir (for a Hilux, at least); I've noticed that the mount fits perfectly where the sway bar bolts to the frame and hope it might be able to reach over there? If not I'll play around with placement. Looking forward to getting it all together though, will post some photos when I'm done. Am surprised Dobinsons components don't seem to be more well known though, they at least appear to be very good quality and at a relatively moderate cost, and all the reviews I've read have been quite positive.

This does give me a little more confidence in my decision. I didn't know that you could remove a leaf from the 111-R? Having the flexibility of being able to "tune" the weight is interesting. This stuff is expensive. I've already spent $3K on the shell. Now It looks like I need to spend another $1K to make the suspension right. So I'm trying to do my very best to get this right the first time. The shell will be the only full-time load. But I hope to be at least close to level when I hook up the trailer or decide to carry a few pound of landscape material. But, at the same time, I don't want to look like a Ford Ranger when no extra load is carried.

Hey man. The 110's will definitely be ideal for you. I'd say you'll end up about 1" over stock height with them installed and the shell.

111's with a leaf removed are essentially 110's and since you're looking for minimal lift, the 110's the way they come would be the way to go. Plus you can always add a leaf to them later if you need additional load support if your plans ever change.

The leaf springs are due in about 1 month from now.

 

Yeah, there are photos on the forum here that show the resi bracket and how the resi is mounted, the adjuster and hose face upwards.

 

You have a pic by chance? I have mediums in the back but I would like it to be a tad above level, I’m happy w/ the current ride quality and afraid adding a leaf to make them “heavy” would reduce the ride.

What are you running in the front? I have 886’s, which I’m also super happy w/
