I want to get one myself. But it looks a little low, like it is lower than the roof...
Also would love to see a step by step OEM tonneau guide

This is on my list of mods to do sooner than later. Is that the standard mounting kit, 30327? No tool box?

I thought the rack sat up on the front bed rail?

I don't know about the regular mount, but with the toolbox mount, it definitely only sits up against, but not over it. The mounts have some angles on the back that wont let them go back any farther, but I decided to cut off sections of the bar on the back of the bed so that I could move the rack back a couple inches farther. At that point, the rack mount then makes contact with the bed itself and it is not worth it to me making any cuts or modifications to the composite bed. EDIT: Images attached

What is the actual point of these?

I always knew them as headache racks and was told they keep items from flying through the cab rear window from the bed in an accident, but not sure if there's any truth to that.

I use mine for ladders and long boards. I also use it to tie various straps for carrying various things. Oh, and it is also supposed to stop stuff from smashing into the back window. There are versions with a full mesh that are probably better-suited for that purpose though.
I like it as it is out of the way and takes up no bed space or impedes bed access like a cap or cover or even racks might.

If you had to do it again, would you have still cut the metal on the bed to fit the rack closer to the window? I'm thinking about putting a Backrack on my future truck but don't want it awkwardly far away from the window.

Do you have any other pics of the truck from far away? I see you have (or had) a DCSB with the rack and I'm just wondering if it looks weird on a short bed Tacoma (vs a short bed Ford or fullsize pickup). Any opinions on a short bed Tacoma with a Backrack?

Also, was this the toolbox you had? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JHMYJIQ?_encoding=UTF8

Did it take up much bed space or look weird?

After all of the cutting I was still pretty happy with how it all turned out, however I ended up getting one of the c-channel rails for the back of the bed that you could probably use and just take out the part that I cut. The only reason for either piece is to stiffen up the back of the bed, and if just the c-channel piece can accomplish that then you don't need to cut anything anyway. That was only 50 bucks, so I'd suggest giving that a try before any cutting just to avoid the hassle. It was part number PT27835100BH, and looking back at my order it was actually only 40 bucks.

I traded the truck in, so I can't take any more pics, but here's a link to where it's for sale now with some pics: https://www.cincyautos.com/used/Toyota/2018-Toyota-Tacoma-0e549a7a0a0e09b1261d602a94f12136.htm
I think it looked fine on the short bed, I actually liked it so much I ended up getting another one for my F150.

As far as the toolbox, that is the one I had (still have it actually, if you're anywhere near central kentucky I would make you a deal way better than $350) but I actually didn't keep it in the bed very much. Moreso because I didn't actually put anything in it and I ended up hauling bikes more often than tools. But when it was in the bed, the thing you have to remember is that the top of the boxes need some clearance to open, so having the back rack meant you couldn't mount the box right up against it or it wouldn't open. Since it was a narrower box it wasnt a huge deal, but keep that in mind.

Ah, I see. So you think it would be possible to remove that top box tube metal piece entirely and purchase the c-channel (accessory) rail and it would allow for the Backrack to slide further back, avoiding the whole cutting ordeal and keeping the bed rigid?

Thanks for the link with the pics!

I'm moving up from an '07 BMW 328i sedan and I always keep a small toolbox in the trunk with other supplies so I'm hoping I can compile it down into the rear under-seat storage before going out to get a bed toolbox.

(Edit: Didn't realize the beds don't come with that front accessory rail from the factory. That would be a separate purchase.)
