For anyone interested it isn't a bulb type light it is an LED soldered to the combination meter circuit board...

The problems are: the light seems to be intermittent, I can't go off mileage as I work around the farm.

When wrapped up in tasks, having the light pop on is a friendly reminder to fill up before heading to town.

I’ve had vehicles that the gas gauge didn’t work. There’s a little button poking out of the gauge cluster. If your odometer is showing the vehicle mileage, press and let go of the button, it’ll show trip A mileage. Press and let go it’ll show trip B mileage. Press and let go, your back to vehicle mileage. Press and let go, you’re back in trip A, press and hold it down until it reads O. How I made sure to never run out of gas was every fill up, I’d zero the trip meter. Then when the trip meter climbs close to the mileage when you run out of gas, you know you need to put gas in it. So for example, you zeroed the trip meter when you filled up, you ran out of gas, the trip meter said 200 miles, you know you need to put gas in BEFORE 200, even better to leave yourself a cushion of error and fill up at 190. Pretty fool proof method to never run out of gas, lights working or not. Even though my gas gauge and lights all work, I zero my trip meter and calculate mpg at every fill up. Miles driven / gallons pumped = mpg.

Where you work has nothing to do with mileage. Unless, for example, you live halfway up a mountain. You have 2 job sites, one at the bottom of the mountain and one at the top of the mountain. On the days you work at the bottom of the mountain, you’re flooring it to make it to work on time, and need to be home by a certain time so you’re flooring it up the mountain home. On the days you work at the top of the mountain, it doesn’t matter what time you start or get home so you drive gently up to work and coast down the mountain home.

Please forgive my ignorance, I’ve never worked on a farm, so maybe there’s something there that causes miles per gallon and miles driven per tankful to vary.

    I know!

Get a 5 gallon Jerry Can and keep it filled in a bracket in the bed so when you run out of gas you can use it to get to a gas station.

Although you are not wrong and I do agree, I would add that letting your tank get so low that odds of sucking up debris is greater than with a full or even a half full tank.

Kind of like putting 100 tadpoles into a 1 acre pond, or those same 100 tadpoles into a 5 gallon bucket. Take a small dip net in each and see what your odds are.

My gas gauge has not worked for months. I use trip counter "A" resetting it every fill. When it went bad I took my average MPG multiplied it by fifteen and when the counter gets to around 350 miles, I start to look for a Shell station..

I'm happy if I can get over 200 miles out of a tank.

I have four, drive 70/30 highway/city and drive like the old man that I am. My average of a year is 24.9, calculating every month to get a stable mileage estimate. No gas gauge makes me rather cautious; it drives Mrs JGO nutty and she tells me I'm nutty for not fixing it. She may be right, I maybe crazy but it just maybe a lunatic she was looking for.

Light or no, does your truck not have a fuel gauge?

I would have thrown a 5 gallon can in the bed. There is no task that is so distracting that I would ignore a basic need like that. I mean, I admire your work ethic, but take care of yourself first, OP.

Be sure to get gas about 20 miles sooner than normal after installing that bumper

Based on the first post, 20 miles sooner is good advice regardless of parts.

Dude, fix your truck before adding toys.

That's like going out to buy new tires after it blows a head gasket.

Is it just the light or does the needle not work either?

The gauge is functional (reacts to a fill, drops predictably).

I added the backstory to the OP for reference.

Try keeping gas in your tank. You will be replacing a burned up fuel pump the way you are currently doing things.
