Anyone here use a heart rate monitor when they're riding?
Been thinking about getting one to get more insight into my rides and get more out of my strava premium. Would pair to my garmin edge 130.
I'm not training or racing, just your regular mtb adrenaline lover.

Worth it? or should I spend the dough on other gear?

In the grand scheme of things, HR monitors are pretty cheap ~$50-75. I have had good experiences with Garmin and found the straps and batteries last a very long time (YMMV).

I think they can provide a very general idea of effort and fitness. I typically only use it during a ride to gage efforts at the limits (either recovery or max effort)

Short people issues. Also 5'3 on a good day. I ride a chameleon on 27.5's.

My doc strictly advised that I needed to start running a heart rate monitor. Apparently, a lot of men in their 40s do permanent damage to their hearts by exercising like they did in their 20s.

My doc said it was imperitive.that I stay out of the "red zone" which for me is below 160bpm.

It was extremely hard at first to stay so low, but, crazy as it sounds, after about a month my climb times were right back to where they were before and, more importantly, I was enjoying climbs substantially more.

There's also the added benefit that I'm much faster on the descents because I'm not completely gassed from the climb.

I run a Garmin watch so I can monitor my heart rate in real time and I'm reluctant to ride without it.

I use one (Wahoo Tickr) in conjunction with a Garmin 530. I don't really pay attention to Strava even though the Garmin auto-syncs it.

I do laps on a jump line and my heart rate will spike to almost 190. It basically turns into interval training, wait till my heart rate drops to ~130's and give it another run. They can be helpful in other senses, on a recent out of state trip I would watch HR on long climbs and if I was in the 170's I was going to have to stop, but if I kept it in the 160's I didn't feel the need to pull over.

Never heard of this. I'm 45 and certainly over that limit on every ride. Most rides average 160, with highs at 180+, over 2-3 hrs. My resting HR is ~50.
Maybe I need to check in with my doc.

My Samsung watch has the heart monitor built-in, so I guess I use it. Kinda nice to see the stats in post ride. Not sure how accurate it is.

Have you ridden 27.5? How do you like it compared to 29's, from a performance and rider height perspective? I thought about trying 29's but I'm cheap and haven't found a set cheap enough for me to just try it out.

Also judging by the name, fellow pinoy checking in. Haha.

I use the garmin HR monitor with my garmin 530. I've had it like a year and haven't had to change the battery haha. I'd say the main benefit is to know when to push hard or not but really only matters if you are training IMO.

Strava uses the HR to calculate the relative effort. I've been off the bike for 6 weeks due to an injury and will ramp back up with the relative effort as a high-level gauge. I use other things to determine how I will ramp up too though. Just an example of how I use it. You could get this same end result with a smart watch or other fitness tracker.

Everyone's max heart rate is different. My max is unusually low. My resting is in the low 40s. Your heart rate numbers look more normal than mine.

My doc said I had developed a slight heart murmur from pushing too high.

If I hit the low 170s I feel like I'm going to die. So I climb in the mid to high 150s and may spike in the 160s on a vigorous descent.

This is a typical "time in zone" chart for me.
    Screenshot_20210511-081142.jpg
My doc basically said "you have ten minutes in the red zone, when do you want to use them?"

Me? I'll save those ten minutes for the descent!
    Screenshot_20210511-081535.jpg

I really love the Garmin for all the real time analytics. It's been great for me to manage things, but staying out of the red has made riding a lot more fun for me, because I'm not always in the Pain Cave.

So just curious how did you learn to better control your heart rate while keeping climb time similar.
Staying calm mind or focusing on more proper breathing techniques?

For me it was just dialling back the effort. I didnt have to be pushing as hard up climbs.

Pacing is a difficult thing. If I go super hard at the beginning and over the limit, I'm usually slower than if I did a hard sustained effort the whole time. The trick is knowing where that limit is and staying just below it. I've been training and riding with power meters now for about 5 years (not on the MTB) so I have a pretty good idea of sustainable effort vs blown up. That being said, I did blow up on a 30 min climb the other day haha.

I'm 54 and have very similar zones with a max around 183 and a RHR of 45. I raced for years and have been tested for VO2, LTR, etc....

Your ride data looks good here, and what a good ride would look like IMO.

No offense to @Dr. Doom Says , but I'm not sure its possible to spend an hour in zone 5. I'm not saying you didn't crank out that ride... but your zones look off to me.
