    Howdy,

I did an extensive search but must not be using the right search terms.

My driver's side cv axle has a significant amount of play in it. I was searching for a video for cv replacement and they all seem to be for the ADD hub, not the Aisin manual locking hub.

There was plenty on the hub itself, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W78RkF1mUOE

BUT now my hub won't spin to the "free" position however. This leads me to believe there is a problem with the hub, or perhaps the axle has damaged the hub. How would I go about diagnosing this please? Will the hub cover even come off if in "locked" position?

Sorry if a dumb question. This is my only vehicle so I want to gather parts before any disassembly

Dirt/grime/old grease will make the spring stick over time, and sometimes twist causing the free/lock to not engage properly.

It's very easy removing a manual hub; just undo the bolts holding the cover.

Since you'll need to remove the hub assembly to pull the cv axle, once you pull the cover, you'll need to remove a retaining ring at the end of the cv axle.

You'll also find that the cone washers holding the hub assembly will be stubborn, so take a BFH and a brass drift, and hit the studs (with the nut flush with the stud, prevent thread damage). This will knock the cone washers loose.

Once the cone washers are all loose, and off, you can easily pull the assembly up and off.

Thanks. I ordered a brass drift yesterday in anticipation of this. Lock ring pliers as well.

Are the cone washers reusable? Should probably order gaskets for the hub cover and body

I can remove the hub cover with it in the locked position?

    Before taking things apart, buy yourself;

detent spring and ball, for the cover/dial

    o-ring for said cover/dial

    lubricant for the o-ring

gasket for the hub assembly to spindle

quality grease, for the inside of the manual hub

paint, optional, for making the cover and dial look pretty

Yes the cone washers are reusable.

I've been able to pull manual hubs in both the locked and free setting; if you're having trouble, just try wiggling it and see if it turns finally. There's a small ball and spring that catches when you move from one setting to another; one manual hub I removed had a broken spring.

It's why I suggest at least buying a detent spring and ball (case you lose it), never hurts to have a backup.

Here's the retaining ring you'll need to remove once the hub assembly is off -

Although Warn is good to go, Aisin hubs are plenty strong and not a weak link in the front end of these Tacoma's

People have busted their manual diff tube, cv axles, among other things before I've seen a manual hub go bad. Not saying it isn't possible, but I'd bet if one did...it was out of neglect IE not rebuilding

All I've ever used on all my rock crawlers was Warn Premium hubs even on a full floater Dana 44 rear axle that had a spool , it had Warn Premium locking hubs

Why would you need a 35mm socket?

If you just search, you can find the best pricing within minutes.

I ordered some of my parts from Yotamasters -

    Genuine Toyota® Hub Dial O-Ring - Yotamasters

Locking Hub Dial Spring and Detent Kit - Yotamasters

Genuine Toyota® Locking Hub Gaskets - Yotamasters

LCE Performance is another source -

    Front Hub(4wd) - Star Gasket OEM Toyota P/N: 43531-60010 (lceperformance.com)

Hell, I think I bought gaskets for manual hubs at Napa too...and they had them in stock.

Also, part number 90119-08466 is just a back up in the event that the retaining ring on the cv axle end fails.

Hell, most people that replace their cv axles don't even know about that bolt as it's missing on tons of vehicles anyway.

I accidentally bought a set, and they just sit in my parts bin -

Just google the stuff, tons of info out there.

Poor fella was dry as a bone. I can’t even get the hub dial freed up/lock ring off, going to have to try soaking in white vinegar or something tomorrow

Take pictures of what you're dealing with exactly.

I take it you're referring to this?

    20200727_181237.jpg

I bet that spring is completely rusted and seized up or even broken preventing you from turning it.

The spring sits below the detent ball shown here.

yes sorry, the hub dial. And seeing what it’s supposed to look like it looks like my lock ring has some broken tabs

I can’t get a pick in there to try and pry it out
