It was end of feb. They had a huge discount offered on there web site. 8-10 OR sitting on the lot. We started off wanting a white base OR it was $38,xxx listed on there site. We took a peek at the Cement OR Prem since my brother was digging the headlights. Salesman said any Tacoma you want is invoice tonight only.

Thing has changed a lot by a few months. I just hopped on their website and also just made a call. MSRP only for now.

Freeman toyota in Santa Rosa offers Costco member discounts that are under MSRP. Just pick out a truck from their stock, and email then asking what the Costco member discount is. Do the same with Autonation Toyota in Hayward

Spent a few days talking with Peterson Toyota in mid April. Their posted trucks online were all already sold.
They wanted a $1000 deposit before even looking at their allocations.

They just emailed back saying all Tacoma posted online are sold.
Price is adjusted to market price, I think they meant MSRP. $1000 refundable deposit for truck in transit*.

Yep, same thing happened when I called them. They also make out of state persons agree to only finance with their dealership and prohibit cash sales. I passed on that.

Tempted to trade in my 2019 TRD Offroad DCLB and wait for these prices to come back down. I believe I got mine for around $33,800 before tax and title.

Here she is, not a great picture. For the time being calling her "Ol' Green". My wife has a red Dyson vacuum that we jokingly call "Ol' Red" whenever we vacuum. Maybe Ol' Green will stick!

I picked this up on Saturday. The dealer's lot was 95% EMPTY. Like almost nothing was there. I would have thought they were going out of business if I did not know better. They normally ahve 30-40 Tacomas in stock. Today they list exactly 1 in stock.

How much are your dealerships charging extra for things like dealer service fees? I found a Tacoma I like, but the dealership is charging $700 for “dealer fees” and $300 for nitrogen filled tires. I know this is just BS, but how BS is it?

EDIT: It’s Modern Toyota of Boone (Boone, NC). I’ve tried to buy vehicles from the Modern chain of dealerships (mainly in northern North Carolina) and they have always tried to charge $1,000 extra for nothing.

$300 for nitrogen is $300 of BS. This is one I’ll walk on. Most dealers don’t even bother to actually use the nitrogen, so they’re charging you $300 for nothing. I’d tell them to remove the cost, they’ll reply with “it’s already in there” and then I’d tell them to take it out.

I’d ask them to itemize that $700 “dealer fee” I thought AZs $500 was bad, sheesh.

My invoice had something like a $85 doc fee and that was the only "fluff". From what someone else on here told me, California has some regulations around crap like that so dealers can't pull this stuff. I know some people give CA crap for some of their regulations, but this is a good one to have to stop gouging.

Just ignore it. Don’t bother trying to even tell them you’re not paying it. Just focus on the actual price you’ll be paying before tax title license. Basically take the actual MSRP of the vehicle before stupid dealer add ons, subtract whatever incentive they have. Actually, you are in Southeast Toyota so they don’t have an incentive. Shoot for 1000 below MSRP and hope to get anything below MSRP.

Dealers in my area (MA/NH) are sitting tight at MSRP. Not even blinking. Toyota has no incentives this month (MA/NH). My question is sort of simple, i thought this thread would have enough members/history for a good answer.

Dealer: "With the shortages we cannot do anything on the price."
Thoughts? I look at it to ways. Either 1, they are just reaping the dealer profits because they can charge - typical supply/demand. Or 2, they really do need to charge MSRP to cover their staff and dealer overhead because even if selling at a discount, they aren't moving the volume of vehicles to make the profit.

Its a MGM DCSB TRD Sport lightly optioned @ $40K - has been on the lot almost a week, and in their online inventory about 2 weeks. i cant believe its not sold.
This dealer has 30 on lot or on the way. Other dealers in my area have none; or less than 5. Makes me think they are just holding firm to make cash because they can & get their inventory up.

I really want to get into a Tacoma - but don't NEED a new vehicle. i struggle with the idea of 'over-paying' for it... Any ideas on getting them to budge on pricing - or just sit and wait...Toyota will keep making trucks...
    thanks!

I just picked up a SR5 DCLB, 4x4, in cement with MSRP of 37,408 for 36,612. It's 796 below MSRP in CA.
Dealer did install film protection on before I could see the truck with retail price of $495. Going to give it to me for $300. But I told them firmly that I am not authorized for this. I am only going to pay what is on the contract or I am walking away. They gave in.
I am beyond stoked it arrived sooner than expected.

I believe it is a mix of 1-2. When I took delivery on Sat the lot was empty. They had no vehicles to sell. They do have a business to run and bills and employees to pay.

with that said, my allocation order had some crap added I did not want and it was added at the port, so IMO they were adding on little ticky tack items to boost the price. Whether that was the dealer adding them or Toyota themselves I don’t know. I didn’t need or want the blackout package at $450. Mini tie downs for $45? What a waste. Door edge guards for $165? They look nice and offer protection but I didn’t want them.

My decision was to just bite the Bullet, I was tired of waiting and there is no end in sight as to when supply chain gets back to normal. I did not want to wait another year even though I had a decent daily driver already. Old, limited in capability, but got me where I needed to go.

I'm guessing it's more #1. Dealers make most of their money on financing, add-ons, and the service department, not on sales of new vehicles. They know with the shortages that someone who needs a vehicle will pay MSRP. I'd try a buying service like costco or truecar with that same truck spec and see if that dealer participates in one of those. If they don't participate in those programs and absolutely won't budge, then it's up to you. But, it sounds like you don't need the truck and don't want to pay msrp, so I guess wait a year until things calm down? If it's been on the lot for over a week and it hasn't sold, they gotta be able to move on price a bit...

Yeah - i don't feel "bad" for them. not in the least. They are a BIG dealer near me, and have inventory. im sure management says "X is the price today."

Thanks for the tip on Truecar. i used them years ago when they were more independent/buyer advocates. was able to find participating dealers near me (the one im talking to is not) and they suggest a .25% - 2.25% discount. This is without signing up which I just don't want to do right now so I can avoid dealers reaching out. This forum is a better tool honestly!
I'm going to keep an eye on it this week - they wanted me to call today and discuss it. They hold the cards because other dealers just don't have Tacoma's right now.

Thanks both for replies that pretty much justify what i was thinking. Hard to be patient, but thankful i don't NEED it right now.

I think it’s #1. There’s a shortage of Tacoma’s nationwide. Longo Toyota had 1 listed on their site last week when I looked. Personally I think a Tacoma is worth its MSRP, it’ll still be worth 95% of that a few years later, if not more. Once someone actually has a truck I want I’ll take one at MSRP. I won’t pay thousands for dealer adds like nitrogen filled tires, permaplate etc though.

I think it is #1. I just purchased a 2021 TRD OR about 10 days ago and 2 of my local dealers wouldn't move on MSRP and one was marked up over MSRP. Those two dealerships I didn't even bother with. After contacting 8 dealers all via email 4 of the 8 dealers didn't have the truck I wanted or it was sold before it hit the lot. The last 4 only 2 of the 4 would move on price and only one of them didn't have any extra fees. At the end of the day in this current market, I would shoot for 1,000 off MSRP, not including any rebates. My dealership didn't add any dealer add ons, but I would negotiate the OTD price to make sure they don't throw in anything at the end. You probably have to purchase the truck before it arrives at the dealership. My truck was in transit when I purchased it. What I noticed is the bigger dealership all told me to pound sand when I tried to negotiate off MSRP and I had to extend my search to the smaller dealerships. This is why I didn’t bother with the first two and only reached out to the other 8. I hope this helps.
