The Beer Nerd - what are you drinking / brewing thread

Started brewing a Honey Blueberry Ale last night. This morning, it’s bubbling away so whatever comes out the other end, it’s at least going to have some alcohol in it!

 

Homebrew Centennial Red Lager....

 

Hudson Valley Incandenza, Charlestowne Fermentory Telstar and Reaver Beach Hazy Tides.

 

My buddy bought some sweet vanilla variants from a stout project by Bottle logic. They were pretty good, but not as much as their prices suggested.

The Triple IPA from Beer zombies was a nice surprise when drinking from the can. I assumed people solved this problem awhile ago, guess not.

A bit of a random impulse purchase at the local Jak's this morning....the 'amber' caught my eye

Pretty decent for what is essentially an imported Redneck brew...nice flavour, and with a wee kick.

Perfect for the back deck this afternoon....shivering. Because, despite a blue sky and sunshine, a bitter north wind and a paltry 14C.

It is apparently January. Again. For the fourth time.

I guess I should be gratified that the local yellow jacket colony shares my appreciation.

Glad I saw her before I picked up my glass

Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. It’s smart. Make the money if it’s there. Kinda like everyone single brand has a seltzer now.

 

Consolation...appropriately named. Notice the trophy says, “You Tried”. Not certain the brewers bothered to try on this one. Straight Drain Beer!

Sometimes it is not about the beer, but what you got to - had to, p'raps - drink instead.

After spending the day shoring up the sagging back deck with my trusty jack-all (ya gotta appreciate Redneck ingenuity!) while battling mutant yellow jackets, I truly craved a fine craft brew.

Sadly, I was due to be disappointed. It appears to have slipped my mind that a relaxing last evening with an apparently thirsty neighbour - well, he IS English, after all, amongst his other forgivable failings - completely depleted my stock of Yellow Dog. Sigh.

And I used up my Redneck quota with a couple bruises and scraped knuckles, courtesy of the aforementioned mechanical evil, so the Cariboo Lager didn't have it's usual appeal.

So, a Dublin Mule in a can, a leftover from St. Patty's day. A surprise gift from a grandniece, in lieu of our usual family dinner of Guinness, salmon, boxty, Guinness, soda bread, colcannon, Guinness, black pudding and Irish Car Bombs. As an aside, how a sixteen-year-old managed to obtain said can absent her parents' ken is likely a mystery that is best left unsolved.

I am sure she got it in much the same way I got my bootleg hooch when I was her age. That would suggest that at some point her very conservative parents will be outraged and near to apoplectic. Conversely, it bodes well for my continued entertainment.

So, I confess to being a fan of everything Jameson, or at least I was; it is truly one of the Nectars of the Gods. But having become something of Dublin Mule snob of late - courtesy of a limitless supply of fresh limes and a high end Jamaican ginger beer at the local Real Canadian Superstore - this particular offering tarnishes the Jameson shine, alas.

It tastes like a bad lemmy. Pretty sure that the buzz that I got wasn't from the ETOH content but rather the high glucose. And any lime essence is all but exhausted on the can graphics

That sugar content probably explains the continued interest from the 'Swarmed' era wasps collecting outside my patio door as we speak.

And why I won't be venturing outside tomorrow without my flamethrower. Yes, we have flamethrowers in The Great White North. They're still legal. This week. Even if airsoft guns may soon not be.

So, I mentioned a never-ending supply of citrus and ginger beer and distillates. Yup, I can't find the paint I need, nuts and bolts nor plumbing components, a replacement switch for my Taco nor ammunition; COVID appears to have impacted a plethora of supply chains from south of the 49th, leaving me with a variety of frustratingly half-completed projects.

But I can buy all the makings for any number of alcoholic (and non-alcoholic, though why would one bother?) that I could possibly want.

I can live with that.
