I bought mine new in late 2013 because I could've bought a 7 year old Tacoma with 100k miles on it for $18-20k at the time or I had negotiated the new truck that I have now (2014 SR5 manual access cab) for 29.5k out the door. For me it made more sense to buy new.

I mean... I'm not wrong. Toyota threw away their Tacoma reliability label with the 3.5. Sad but true.

Unless you can provide something more than anecdotal evidence, you're not right either lol. A handful of threads on here don't make the 3.5 a ticking time bomb. Plenty of high mileage 3.5s on here. Unless someone can get the data from Toyota to determine an actual failure rate, then it's all just guesses and opinions.

    Yep.

Guys read stuff on TW that like 50 guys posted on how they had issues with the 3.5. Umm out of how many hundred thousand tacos with the 3.5? All engines have issues, including the “torque monster” 4.0.

3.5 will be just as reliable as the 4.0. How often do you hear about Lexus cars with the 3.5 grenading?

These guys with the “superior” 4.0 really make me laugh.

Simple google search my friend. Edmunds, Consumer reports, Jd power... Talk to ANY service manager at a Toyota dealer. They will tell you the same.

150k on a 4.0.. just broken in.... 150k(if it makes it) on a 3.5. Gamble every time you drive it.

How can you assume that the 3.5 will be as reliable. Assumption is not facts.

I have and they hadn’t seen anything that indicated a systemic problem. Also, none of your other sources are going to have actual numbers from Toyota.

    Hyperbole.

You have presented no facts. Just your own opinion. It’s nearly impossible to determine exactly how reliable any of these engines are, so you’ll have to forgive my reluctance to believe your claims of impending doom lol.

3.5 has been for a while and been proven to be a great engine. 2GRs in general are very reliable v6s. Not sure what you are getting at.

    I see.

So the 4.0 never had any issues? Got it.

uh, thats basically what you are doing. You are also presenting a negative proof. "The 3.5 is unreliable, prove me wrong."

The engine is shared across 16 models between Toyota and Lexus, there are literally hundreds of millions of miles on several million engines.

    exactly.

people seem to think the 3.5L is new and also exclusive to the Tacoma. It’s been around a while in the most reliable of name plates such as the RX, Camry, Highlander, and Sienna. If we want to be mad about the motor, it should be about the fact that our trucks got a minivan engine LOL

The 3rd gen may or may not have quite the same level of reliability as older ones—it remains to be seen. But probably won’t be because of the 3.5...

But then, applying logic evenly, how can you assume it won't? You have not presented any evidence, just your own opinions.

Think that will impact engine longevity at all?
