Question about craigslist Tacoma

Does the transmission issue mentioned in this post give anyone red flags? I am not well versed in possible problems the lag from park to reverse or drive could be indicating. Thanks.

I wouldnt touch an 2005 ,that year truck at the miles listed might also have headgasket problems,along with the transmission problem,both big $$$ repairs.

Putting aside the tranny glitch, the thing has one golden attribute. It has a tonneau cover in one of the picks. My Uncle Pete (now gone to the great garage in the sky) said that the presence of a tonneau cover on a pickup meant that the owner was a real prima donna as far as being a driver goes. I recall him saying something like, "No way could one of them fancy dancer tonneau gents abuse a vehicle and it's a sure sign they's truck was babied."

So if I'm looking for a second gen what are the good years? I know about frame issues, but not other common ones.

 

The oldest one they made. They got all the bugs out by then.

 

07-15

 

09-11s are good pre face lift trucks with electronic and saftey goodies, skip 2012 due to lack of shutdown purge SAIS, 2013-2015 are great years if you want the updated facelift + electronic and saftey goodies.

07-08 if you want a no frills, less electronic nannies truck.

Literally out of all the years of the 2nd gen skip 05,06 and 2012.

2007 on up .

 

2011 is much sought after because it represents the only prime number within the 2nd generation range. IF you see one of them pounce on it.

 

You can take your 2012 to the dealer and they will flash the shutdown purge onto it per a TSB. My dad has a 2012 that just had the air injection pump replaced under the extended warranty. While it was there they flashed the shutdown purge on the computer. It purges just like my 2013 every time he shuts it off.

 

That TSB has some expiration based on mileage and year, that stated didnt know they also did a reflash of the ecu as well.
