    Please help! Thank you

My completely stock 2017 TRD Sport Tacoma – 22,300 miles on it, which hasn't had the battery out at all, just failed emissions inspection today. - Local shop - not Toyota dealer.

The Massachusetts inspection station told me and showed me the inspection that said:

    1. Miles since code clearing = 2

    2. Warm up since code clearing = 1

    3. Readiness result = FAIL

The inspector asked me if I cleared the codes, disconnected the battery, had any work done to it recently, or jump started any one. I answered NO to all those questions. I don’t know how to clear codes, never disconnected the battery and not sure what Readiness result is. I drove my truck about 2 miles from work to the station. They did an oil change and then failed the inspection. Told me to drive it 100 miles then return.

    1. My question is how can the codes get reset or cleared when I did not do anything. - Miles since code clearing = 2

    2. He checked the battery terminals and they were tight. NO red engine light on. No signs of problems – always starts, runs and drives fine.

Thank to any one that can help!

Where were you 2 miles before that?

Is this a scam to get you to spend some money?

I drove from work - about 1 1/2 miles to the dollar store. Stayed in dollar store for 10 minutes, Came out of store and drove across the street to station that did the inspection

How long is the emissions system under warranty?

Maybe whoever changed the oil thought the maintance light was a check engine light and they tried to clear it. Readiness monitors are just monitors for the different systems on the truck. A certain criteria (milage, speed, etc) has to be met before the monitors can be verified. Drive it for a bit and maybe AutoZone can tell you if your monitors are set, then you can go through emissions again

2017s have to do emissions testing in MA? Seems odd.

Even in CA you have 8 years until you have to start doing that.

Emissions systems federal is 8 years /80k miles. Some states are more, like 10 years /120k miles.

Thanks for all the responses -
Federal emissions warranty is 8 years/80k miles. Toyota dealer told me no - only cat. converter was covered

But why does the inspection say 1.__________ Miles since code clearing = 2

How can the code get cleared if I never unhooked the battery and the battery isnt dead - All my preset stations on radio are still there

Federal emissions is 8/80k and typically only covers cats and ecu failures. Some cars have california emissions warranties on some components and can be anything from 7/70k to 10/150 I think for pzev vehicles. Not sure on what the Tacoma has but should be in owners manual. But it’s only for component failures. If you only drive short distances your monitors won’t ever run or if you never let your fuel level get low enough.

I took my dad's Altima to do smog and he didn't drive the car much since last year. The smog guy plugged the machine into the car then 2 minutes later told me that it would fail the test. Told me to drive the car for 50-100 miles, if going on the freeway, do not go faster than 65 mph. He said something about the car have to complete a drive cycle. My dad changed battery about a year ago and he never drove it longer than 10 miles at a time. I took his car and drove it all week then brought it back and it passed the test. Your Tacoma might have the same problem but you said you haven't disconnected the battery before. Before you take it back to Tacoma, try driving it for a week and rack up some miles, take it back to your smog guy and run the test again, it should be free and result might be different and it will pass after driving it for awhile. 22k on a 2017 implies this truck does not get driven much so it's worth trying this.
