Tough call. $20k salary bump is nothing to scoff at. Maybe your current employer can entice you to stay with a little salary negotiation now that you have other offers on the table

Yeah thats what I would do. Id take an established company and job security any day over higher pay. But I think a $20k offer is something to bring up to the current boss man.

I'm the same way. I couldn't do what a lot of people do these days and bounce around every couple years by choice. I guess it depends on your field too though.

Ive always been told it hurts your resume to do that. Atleast for people who care enough about having and keeping up a resume. We get general laborers in at my work that might last a week or three before moving to the next factory and repeating the process.

I was once told that, in software at least, you're doing yourself a disservice if you stay at one job more than 2-3 years. The reasons were 1) variety helps you keep your skills sharp, and 2) it's easier to get hired into a new title/pay bracket than it is to get promoted.

The advice makes sense... I resent the industry for putting developers in that position, and don't follow it myself.

My current company at one time frowned on job hoppers. But then some recent managers that change jobs every 2-3 years came onboard and hire people who jump around. Back in New York we would interview someone and say "5 years of experience -- yea right. They have 1 year of experience 5 times"

Im gonna hit 4 years this summer at my first and only full time job. Only left for 4 months one semester as school got too crazy to do both. I like it, something new every day for the most part and I enjoy helping the company grow.

I guess it depends on what you're hiring for. When I got that advice, I was in the startup scene in Chicago. The "serial entrepreneur" (gross) mindset calls for someone who can reliably build something from scratch. It doesn't need to be great, it just needs to be good enough to sell to the next set of investors. In that case, one year of experience five times can actually be useful.

I refreshed my high school resume when I moved out here in 2011.. not including side jobs and my own short lived repair business, I've had 6 jobs since then and all of them have offered me employment and hired me after seeing my work ethic or the product of my actual labors

    I don't remember what job hunting/interviewing actual looks like:anonymous:
