Damn I didn't think anywhere could be more strict than here, guess I was wrong.

Where we really get screwed is on the whole CARB thing, if an aftermarket part (emissions or engine related) isn't CARB approved, then you'll fail your visual inspection every other year. CARB is nothing but a money grab, costs a ton for a company to apply for it and get approved.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Get the truck hot well before the test and do not shut off the engine while waiting for the test. Good luck!

Unless you bought out of state. :)

Other than a battery issue, I'm thinking more of an odd glitch during the test. All they do is hook up an ODB II Scanner and run it.

I'd have the battery and alternator tested. Most auto parts places can do that for you. 2017 may be due for a new battery.

If it still fails, take it to the dealer to be inspected. Just keep your mouth shut, pay them for the inspection. If it fails is an EPA Emission issues

    From EPA website.
    https://www.epa.gov/transportation-...frequent-questions-related-transportation-air

Specified major emission control components are covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever first occurs). The specified major emission control components only include the catalytic converters, the electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU), and the onboard emissions diagnostic (OBD) device or computer. If you are a resident of an area with an Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) program that meets federal guidelines, you are eligible for this warranty protection provided that:
    • Your car or light-duty truck fails an approved emissions test; and
    • Your vehicle is less than 2 years old and has less than 24,000 miles (up to 8 years/80,000 miles for certain components); and
    • Your state or local government requires that you repair the vehicle; and
    • The test failure does not result from misuse of the vehicle or a failure to follow the manufacturers’ written maintenance instructions; and
    • You present the vehicle to a warranty-authorized manufacturer representative, along with evidence of the emission test failure, during the warranty period.

ROCK LOBSTER - THANK YOU I PRINTED THE INFO YOU GAVE ME AND WILL ALSO LOOK IT UP IN MY OWNERS MANUAL - I DID CHECK THE BATTERY - I USED A DIGITAL METER AND READ 13.6 WHILE RUNNING AND UNDER LOAD AND 12.6 WITH ENGINE OFF. I BELIEVE THIS SHOWS THE BATT. AND ALTINATOR OK BUT WILL GET IT CHECKED ANY WAY

THANKS TO ALL FOR THE HELP!

Was the 12.6 volts right after you shut the truck off?

And, the next comment will be something like, "wait an hour for the voltage to settle, and check again"...

    :D

Yeah... Pretty much. If it holds at 12.6, it still has some life in it.

Yep in PA you have to get emissions to pass inspection. Doesn't matter if it's new.

    100% correct advice......
It has nothing to do with the emissions. The various system monitors need to be properly activated. This is done by driving the vehicle for a day or two.

It sounds like you didn't drive it long enough for the engine and exhaust to reach full operating temperature. The inspection guy I use told me to drive for at least 20 minutes before coming in. I wouldn't panic until I drove it the 100 miles and went back for another try.

VWs have an elaborate cold start/idle/accelerate/cruise/decelerate dance to speed along the emissions readiness.

The TDIs are the ones that had a special mode where if they detected only the front wheels spinning with 0 degrees of steering input to go into smog check mode, but that wasn't exactly legal.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Drive 'long' miles - not 10 trips at 10 miles. Try 4 trips at 25 miles or 2 trips at 50 miles.

You're battery voltage dropped too low. You're Taco started, but the hard start reset the DTCs. That distance was not good enough to set all of rhe Readiness Codes. Get a new battery and drive 40mi to 50mi.

Wow, didn’t know you had to drive a bit before the test. Interesting.

OP where are you in mass? Is this regionally or a relatively new thing? Never had to have an emissions test (that I know of) during inspection but wouldn’t surprise me if it’s a new mandate in our lovely state.

Thanks TONERED - this makes sense - I did test the battery under load - 13.6 v running - 12.6 not running - I thought I had a good battery but it is the original one
