Narrowly avoided having to replace a garage door opener today...couple nights ago my wife said it wouldn't go down all the way, seemed like the opener just up and died on us. I did some troubleshooting and it didn't seem dead, but for some reason it would barely go down at all. Also had to explain the concept of the emergency disconnect on the opener to my wife (she thought it would reset the opener or something, I have no idea but she sure was surprised when she pulled it and it went crashing down).

Couple of YouTube videos later and it seemed like the issued was either the sensors not lining up properly or the main gear on the opener being jammed up. Checked a handful of different things, testing it along the way with no success. Then right before I had to leave for work I tested it one last time and it went down a bit further. Tested it more and it didn't work, then a few tests later it was working perfectly. I have no idea what I did but wife reported back saying it was working just fine.

After the water heater going out in January, and the lawn sprinklers being all jacked up, and now this, I am feeling this house is pushing us out so we can finally move.

Garage doors shouldn't go crashing down when you pull the release on the opener, they should pretty much remain in the same spot. You should be able to open and close the door with one hand and open or close to half way and it should stay there. Assuming it's a sectional door, you should check the springs on it to make sure they aren't broken. If they aren't, then you probably need more tension on the springs to balance the door out. If they are the coil springs directly above the garage door, they are extremely dangerous to mess with if you have never done it before. One thing you never do is remove any of the bolts for brackets that have a cable attached to them. You can adjust spring tension (put more winds on the coil springs) using a vise grip to hold the spring bar and a couple of long, large screw drivers that fit the spring holes tightly or make some winding bars to fit the spring holes. Add half a turn at a time, tighten the lock bolt and check the balance. When adding turns to the springs, you should be pulling down. The vice grip should be on the top side of the bar to hold tension on the other spring and the cables.

I installed garage doors and openers for a living in another lifetime. Let me know if you have questions or need help. Sounds like the opener had a mis-aligned close sensor (eyes at the bottom of the door) and possibly is being over-worked if the door isn't balanced.

Yea, I dont fuck with garage door springs. When mine broke on my house in Florida. I called the company that installed the door when the house was built. $300 later they replaced it. There's some things I dont mess with.
Granted I work high voltage and gas and petroleum daily, but garage springs. Nah fam. I'm good.

The spammer wrench for king coilovers works great for cranking the garage coils. That’s what I used when I swapped ours last year

I'mma about to take a hammer to shit here....

I need a good Toyota tech for some input. VSC code 31(Flashing)
    2017 Tacoma OR M6.
Awhile ago wheeling, 1.5yrs ago. Hit a decent boulder in Windrock. Knocked the steering out of alignment. No immediate damage of bent tie rods etc. Turned on VSC light and steering wheel was off 90* for the ride home. Few hundred miles.
Got an alignment, no bent tie rods. VSC light stayed on. Took to dealer, paid for diagnostics. Told, Spiral cable bad needs replaced. Otherwise no VSC or auto LSD until done.
I left it at that for awhile. Dont drive the truck that much.
Finally got to the point of replacing the spiral cable. Before I did, pulled the VSC codes. Code 31. No ABS codes and ABS does work just fine. Only a VSC code and problem.
Cant find a list of what a flashing 31 code is. Replaced spiral cable assy with angle sensor. Codes gone. Zero point done. All good right?
No. Drove for more than 10mins. VSC light back on. Same flashing Code 31 from VSC.
What is VSC code 31? Why would it clear for a few short trips after replacement of the spiral cable with sensor assy?
Which at $486 is not cheap. Replacement is from Toyota and OEM, has warranty

You had the zero point done up here? I wouldn’t trust them at all.

I don't know if it actually went "crashing down" but when it is about 1/3 of the way down and it's released, it's going to slide down. It does have the coil spring above the door that I'm not messing with. I fiddled with the sensors, made sure they were clean, the screws nice and tight, had power, etc, and they didn't seem to be the issue because the trolley would still stop at the same point even with the door unattached and the trolley moving along on its own. Methinks the main gear on the opener itself was a bit jammed up and it was stopping itself to prevent any damage and after enough tests it unjammed. Who knows.

Did it myself. Its not hard to do. But if it fails, gives you just a flashing code.

Little grease on the trolley will help prevent sticking. You can buy special opener grease at Home Depot or if you have some wheel bearing grease, that works too. Is it chain drive or screw drive? You can grease up the screw and use chain lube or WD40 for the chain if it's that.

Code 31? That’s not a normal code for a newer truck

What does it mean? Cant find anything except older Toyota ABS codes.
This is coming from the VSC system. Which cleared, then came back.

ok so congrats on being the first person to give an oldschool flash code for the ABS system! i honestly had to look that up to cross reference. so it can mean one of two things. but both pertain to the RF speed sensor. c1401 or c1405. What would honestly be the best move here is find someone with a scanner ( @xtremewlr ) that can graph what the front speed sensors are doing.. chances are the ABS wirse got stretched or something. its a either a circuit code or malfunction code. nothing to do with the spiral cable

honestly i didnt know they still had the tables in the computers. as stated above, i did find it in TIS and it narrows it down to two codes pertaining to the RF speed sensor

it is also possible the bearing has sustained damage to the tone ring (very likely by the sounds of the impact) this can cause all kinds of funky readings.
