State officials have received 622 complaints of gas price gouging in North Carolina as of Thursday morning, according to N.C. Department of Justice spokeswoman Laura Brewer. Six are tied to the Exxon station on West Sugar Creek Road out of nearly 60 in Mecklenburg County.

An employee who answered the phone at the gas station Thursday said the store manager was out of town, and asked an Observer reporter to call back. A second call went to a voicemail that hadn’t been set up.

According to Observer news partner WBTV, gas station owner Rey Shah denied any intention of price gouging and said high prices were meant to deter people from draining the pumps.

“I promise you there’s no price gouging. We’re not in this to make a quick buck,” Shah told a WBTV reporter.

ExxonMobil no longer owns or operates any Exxon- or Mobil-branded service stations in the United States, spokeswoman Julie King wrote in an email Thursday. Local stations set their own prices, she said.

On Thursday, a reporter observed the station’s prices were down to $3.19 for regular gasoline, $3.79 for mid-grade and $3.99 for premium.

    What is price gouging?
North Carolina’s price gouging law took effect this week during major gasoline outages related to the pipeline attack.

“I will not allow businesses to take advantage of this incident to charge excessive prices,” Attorney General Josh Stein said in a statement Tuesday announcing the measure.

The law prohibits businesses from excessively raising prices during a crisis and goes into effect when the governor declares a state of emergency, according to Stein’s statement.

Businesses severely impacted by incidents that prompt a state of emergency may “have a reasonable need to increase prices in order to resupply, but they should disclose these increases and allow people to make informed purchasing decisions,” the announcement read in part.

“Businesses cannot, however, unreasonably raise the price of goods or services to profit from a state of emergency.”

People are encouraged to report suspected price gouging by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or by filing an online complaint at ncdoj.gov/file-a-complaint/price-gouging.

    A dispute over gas prices
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to a dispute between two customers and and an employee over gas prices at the Exxon station on West Sugar Creek around the same time Rankin recorded the video, department spokesperson Thomas Hildebrand wrote in an email to the Observer.

“As a result of the investigation, it was determined that no crime occurred, but two of the subjects involved had outstanding warrants and were placed under arrest,” Hildebrand said. “There were no charges related to the incident that occurred at the gas station. “

There have been no major signs of “gas rage” or major incidents in Charlotte, CMPD Capt. Brad Koch said at a news conference Wednesday.

Officers are responding to 911 calls for service, but CMPD asks residents to call 311 for non-emergency requests or go to CMPD.org to file reports.

I think we escaped the gas crisis here on the gulf coast simply due to the abundance of gas coming in ports here. We're at the lucky end of the pipelines lol

Filled up gas for my boat yesterday 89 octane at $2.89/gal

    Sorry guys.

    Nice to be home thanks!
Wife has undergone several more tests and they can't find anything wrong! So more test scheduled, I think for another CT scan of chest. She seems to feel alright other than she said her throat was sore and swollen lymph nodes there. Hope they find some cure.
Vacation after my work in AZ was fun..put a bit of thrashing on the Jeep...first hill climb I got a hot oil warning and checked transmission temperature, it was 228! I let it cool down and spit some cold water on the cooler to speed the process. While waiting for it to cool down, I looked at my cousin and said...lol...it's no Toyota

Back way to Crown King was fun but there were a few obstacles that I took the bypass due being without another vehicle. Two obstacles at the end had no bypass and I was thinking that a crowbar might be needed to remove me from the seat...pucker factor.20210507_125957.jpg

    Thanks! Here's a copy/paste:

This is my buddy’s trailer is used for transporting his 36hp zero turn. Blew the expanded steel mesh out of the tailgate. I had him buy some heavier mesh and two 10’ sticks of 1x3 rectangular tubing.

I added the second and fourth pieces of tubing from each outside. (four pieces total, you can see they're unpainted) The mesh is heavy duty. Added a good bit of weight to the gate, but the mower tires will ride over those three supports.

In hindsight, what I SHOULD have done, is have him buy 1/8" flat stock to make a "frame" out of, welded the mesh to THAT, then just 8 stitch welds to the trailer gate frame. That would make replacement much easier. However, I don't think he'll have an issue... the tires are fully supported now and with all the extra spot welds this mesh isn't going anywhere...

Edit to add: I calculated just a touch over 500 spot welds. Overkill? Yep. But I don't want to do it again!

Mesh obviously blown out. It was also work hardened from his laborer constantly trying to hammer it back. Brittle...

Borrowed my friend's air chisel, this sucker made quick work of all the crappy, cold spot welds holding the original mesh on.

    Over 500 spot welds...

Pic from this morning before I left for work. Finished up around 10pm last night.

He picked it up this morning, he's very happy. He said it even feels better when he loads his mower, less flex, more stable. The new mesh doesn't even bend. Mission accomplished!

Previous poll I voted no ticks lol at least not that I'm aware of. I give some thought and wondered if we all don't have some type of oddities???
For this poll, I enjoy working with metal and vehicles, but not so much as I used to it seems. I think the fact doing it for a living and my latest project being so involved (1968 Corvette). I'm only 53 but starting to look forward to retirement. I feel like having a newer sporty road car, my Jeep and Tacoma for off roading and camping, add in some fishing and hunting,....done working!

Its true , we all have some kinda fault. We're not perfect and we need to cut each other some slack. We have enough problems of our own without someone dumping more on us. ;)
