2016 access cab offroad recieved 1 week in january.
checked all fluids no oil in front diff, quart&half low in the automatic, transfercase full and rear diff slightly low. had to grease driveshaft. 62 thousand miles now. in that time replaced battery just before 3 years. Gauge cluster replaced last year as it wouldn't pass on speed sensor data to the computer causing check engine light replaced under platinum warranty. had 3 transmission re-flashes to get it working properly. rear tag lights filling with water had to convince dealer to replace. All services done at the dealer with hit and miss results. Had rodent damage to wiring while camping. still running stock tires and brakes will be replaced before this coming winter. Drivers seat sucks and causes severe pain in my sciatic nerve on my right hip. parked outside in the open the whole time. no cosmetic issues. Quicksand color. my changes, avid rocker guards have kept the parking lot dings off my truck but now need repainting due to the abuse. bed mat and tire mud flaps have earned their keep. still have kazoo whistle at 65 mph with highway cross wind, headliner still a little short in width as it came from the factory. just had all fluid changes and plugs changed at 60,000 miles plugs looked good with even color. gas mileage still holding up 22 mpg long travel 70 mph, city highway 18-20 mpg. city street 18 mpg highway towing 2,000 trailer or 30 mph head wind 15 mpg. Changing oil every 5000 miles. engine not consuming any oil in the time period. running Chevron gas, middle grade exclusively. All in All still very happy with my truck.

peeves: carpet hard to clean, dealer service, have to re-torque everything they touch, just don't trust them to do the details. passengers side floor mat sliding around and pretty damn uncomfortable front seats. worried that my 2016 model truck is the only one not on the fuel pump recall.
all in all a pretty good truck.

Traded my ‘16 back in March for a ‘21………Tacoma. Went with another 3rd gen Taco bc I hated the ‘16 so much…lmao.

But seriously. Think I had all the issues with the ‘16- trans shifting, diff howl, frame advisory and Toyota addressed them all. Not a perfect truck but still a great truck. It ran well and if the new owner keeps up with the scheduled maintenance as I did and doesn’t neglect it, it will run to at least 300k miles like a Toyota should.

I will say the trans-shift points are noticeably better on the ‘21.

Little update on my 2016... I will hit 5 years old on July 13th... last week an O-ring in my AC system went so it drained the charge and no longer cooled. Even though I have ECP protection they said it was not covered under warranty. Cost me apx $80 for the part and the labour to install/recharge the system. Working fine now.

Got mine in Nov 2015. So that's over 5.5 years now. Something like 86000km. Only recall was that AC drain thing. No TBL leak, no brake issues etc.

Busted my antenna when I backed out of a garage. Put a new one in myself but never got the roof fixed, really want to but it's just too expensive.

Haven't replaced the battery yet though, no signs that I need to yet. Bet just saying that means it's going to die this week lol. Any recommendations for one in BC/Canada?

You hated the 16' and bought a newer version of the same truck? The frame coating is the same isn't it, just done at a service visit rather than already done on the new one.

    Same engine/trans/pretty much everything.

Getting the frame coating done and a tune would have given you the same thing, no?

Got mine back in Feb of 2016. Currently sitting at 85k miles. Some major issues that have occurred since ownership are the 3rd brake light leak, cracked head gasket, and faulty passenger airbag sensor(aka if I got into an accident, my passenger airbag would not deploy) that I had to get fixed 4 different times. I feel like this truck is going through hell and back multiple times lol.

2016 Trd off-road manual purchased in November 2015. 80k miles. Stock battery failed in 2019. Haven’t been on the TW in forever. Still a great truck. On original brakes, probably will swap soon. Will sell for 2022 twin turbo hybrid tundra.

2016, 51,434 miles, no issues at all. Just put new tires on. Probably be proactive and get a new battery.

My truck is still kicking with 63k miles on it. Original clutch and brake pads/rotors so far. Short of air filters, tires and oil I haven't done anything else for general maintenance, except 3 batteries. (Arizona heat killed factory battery year 3, 9 month deployment where truck sat and wasn't touch AT ALL killed the second) Leaks from the 3rd brake light pretty bad.... Other then the original fuel/sand issues some people may remember it's been a decent truck.

Now It's OVT, lift, wheels, tires and a bunch of lights. Short Throw shifter (core) and a Accumulator delete for the clutch. I bought my truck in November 2015.

I have owned a pre-owned 2016 for 3.5 years and have 73k on it, bought it with 34k. I haven't had any problems with it except the blower fan bearing got bad, and the brakes replaced due to warping but it still feels like they are a bit even after the replacement. Overall its been a great truck. Fuel pump is original, no leak on brake light, rear diff is good, I think it is one of the better built 2016's

Sarcasm. I actually really liked the ‘16. Just wanted to treat myself to a new one after a long year. Perhaps I should’ve just sank a few bucks into getting a Magnuson supercharger but I’m enjoying the cement gray which hides the pollen/dust much better than black, apple carplay, leather seats, remote start for those hot or cold mornings, radar cruise is nice when you’re on the highway…and the LED lights. I wasn’t a fan of those until now. They really do brighten the night. The JBL sound is so much better than the standard “premium” radio.

2016 OR acces cab. Ordered in 2015, got it in 2016 & now has 70K. Nothing but, regular maintenance & two software updates. TBS-0077-16 & TBS-0062-18.
After those updates, the "drivalibity" of the truck improved quite a bit.

It has been dependable and reliable as I expected to be, like all my prior Toyota trucks. Currently own 3. However, IMHO besides the looks,
the only thing better of the 3 gen over the 2nd gen is the cab insulation (less road noise inside cab).

I have a 2016 Mag Grey, AC, SR5, 2.7, AT, 4X4, 45K. I have had no problems and plan to keep it. No recalls. Regarding CVT transmission, I do not drive it aggressively (floor it). I occasionally use it on mountain dirt roads sometimes in snow and it’s all good. I have no trouble accelerating onto a freeway and merging with 70-80mph traffic. Just make gradual accelerator input. I’ve driven over Sierras, Rockies, (and live in SF/steep hills) and have no problems with rpm hunting. Just take it easy and enjoy driving. It does seem like the gearing adjusts to driving style. I get average 20-23 mpg. No leaks or loose parts/vibration. I’ve owned previous Tacoma’s including an early 90s 4X4 that went to 250K with no issues. Love em all! So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it

nice! I haven't read that the SC is that amazing and for 10K is sure as hell should be.

I had the prem. sound, first thing I did was upgrade all speakers and put a huge ported sub across the back.

Just a few thoughts , when I totaled my gen 1 and got my 1st of 3 3rd gen's, my '16 SR had the low transmission fluid and several tsb updates but after taking a couple long trips with it the transmission never seemed to be right. My understanding is the transmission cooler is a port added part, so I can't really blame Toyota for that. It got good MPG. Put a little more than 45k on it. Hated the color it is was all that was available at the time and never had faith the transmission would last.. so I got a '19 SR same low fluid issue, but I knew what to expect and had it filled sooner. The svs writer's don't really like to bring it in for a fluid check especially after a PDI is preformed and it hard to write the ''story'' for warranty coverage, not my problem. This one had terrible fuel mileage compared to the '16 and a lot of noises they acknowledged were there and couldn't find or fix. Now I have a '21 and so far it's every thing I expect from a Toyota I'm retiring in 6 months and I hope it's the last truck I buy.

I bought a 16 with 13k miles about 2-3 yrs ago. Brought it home from Virginia and the next day went over some things.
Pulled the dip stick out and noticed it wouldn’t go back in. Found it pulled out of the block. Pain in the ass to get dealer from another state to get it fixed. I was able to clean the o-ring and secure the mount myself, but demanded an oil change. After that I had issues with radio after an update on my IPhone. Dealer wanted to replace it, but used TW to blog issues, and was able to fix without replacement of head. Then trans problem was “flashed” to fix issue on cold starts Revving engine in reverse. I wanted the trans fluid checked with much debate, dealer refused.. a lot of chat about this one. Still unknown fluid level. I think it’s low, but to lazy to do it myself yet.
Other than some minor quirks, I’m loving the truck. It’s a beast hauling loads and getting great MPG with “easy does it” driving. I want to add bed lights and switch in cab (didn’t come with) I added a bed rack, custom grill, and debadged everything but “SR5”. Looking to upgrade stock tires and add lift in near future.
Regular maintenance from dealer and most of the time drive my work truck. Oil is changed due to time rather miles.. hoping to keep it till the doors rust out, or the frame…
