Anyone figure out how to disable ALL airbags for off-road use?

I have searched and searched and nothing has come up on how to disable temporarily.

I am planning on jumping my truck and my previous tacoma the airbags went off.

Unplug them, unplug the SRS ECU. They are energized to actuate.

sure. better be safe than sorry. Leave battery unplugged at least 10 minutes before you mess with them!

 

Is there an easier way? Like possibly just pulling a fuse or something?

 

looks like it’s shared with some of the ignition fuses so no.

What do you think about running a switch to the airbag control module?

 

that is also possible. Would be easier than trying to get to the plugs under the center console area

I thought about a switch too, but then I thought about how safe that would be powering on and off each live airbag.

 

Good call, maybe just disconnect the battery when you turn it on or off? There has to be someone who has accomplished this. I don't have a full cage yet, so this is why I am wondering. Once I go full cage I guess I would remove the air bags

 

a 4PST switch would work, there are 4 different power sources to the SRS computer and occupant classification ECU.

You would also need to make sure you don't go ham until the switch is flipped for about 2-3 minutes, there is an internal circuit that maintains voltage to the computers even when power is removed. I would be hesitant to flip the switch back on with the truck in motion, but switch on and off while stationary and engine not running.

I’m wondering if you disable the signal from the seat belt signifying it’s latched, that would prevent airbag deployment? Just guessing, but I think if it thinks you’re driving without the seat belt, the air bags won’t deploy.

 

that's all based on speculation though, I don't know what the "brain" is really doing there, you can definitely fake the system out. I'd rather unplug the occupancy sensor rather than the seatbelt buckle, seems that would have a better chance of preventing unwanted deployment?
