Top of Maine. I’ve been doing tuning session in Bangor and have one scheduled for this Sunday.
I plan to do one in Portland possibly next month. Still need a bit more planning though.

Yeah it's aggressive BECAUSE KDMAX doesn't let your transmission constantly shift 6, 5, 4, 4,5,5,4,5,4,4,5,4,5,6,5,4,5,4,5,4 all the time! Don't you know THAT'S what is BEST for your transmission the constant shifting! KDMAX only lets it shift 1,2,3,4,5,6 then come to a hill then down shifts 6,5 maybe 4 then back to 5,6 then holds steady....that's what's BAD for the trans you know...holding constant gears and acting like a real transmission....KDMAX BAB BAD! NOT!!!!!:annoyed:

Engine and transmission mapping is not mapped the way it is because manufactures are risking failure, they are mapped the way they are to adhere to EPA emissions guidelines and to provide an almost guarantee that they will last at least past the warranty under expected usage.
If you are tuning your vehicle or adding aftermarket parts. There’s is an assumption you are understanding that risk and choosing not care. If you did, there wouldn’t be a thought in your mind of making it go faster, drive better. Etc.

You do realize these tunes are developed with a ton of data logging and watching transmission pan fluid temps as well as torque converter temps, right? If the tune results in pan and TC temps equal to stock along with smoother shifts I’d like to hear how it could damage the transmission.

Wow the bro crap is strong in this thread.

Being the fact that I'm a lead technician that worked in a transmission shop for almost 20 yrs including a 78 Camaro, 81 Chevy drag vehicles, built transmissions for mud bogging and so on, I am actually a source unlike anything here.

All you have is data logging on transmission Temps. OOOOO, 1 reference to over 100 moving parts. It doesn't tell you line pressures, valve positions, pressures in the TC or in each clutch pack. You didn't sit there and tow 6800lbs that the truck is rated for for months and 1000s upon 1000s of miles with the tunes.

I don't need to present anything, because I'm the one in the field how has done it day in and day out. So Don't try to give me that bro science Socal level garbage.

As for examples of what will be seen, stress fractures on things like sun gears, broken sprag clutches, separated clutch assembly in the TC, stress fractures on input shaft, I could go on for DAYS.

When toyota is presented with a warranty claim and tells you to take a flying leap, don't say no one told you.

You DO NOT PLAY WITH TRANSMISSIONS BASED ON TEMPERATURES. Using that as your primary and only data point just cost any and all respect for anyone involved in this tune. You have no idea what your doing and shouldn't be doing jt.

Did someone run over your puppy today?

Make sure you post this in all the vF threads for every tune including OV2.0 etc… or are just picking on KDMax? Don’t forget PowerThirst, Coyoza, Valley Runner and all the other tunes.

Also, based on your logic above, enjoy your shitty stock Tacoma tune. Tuning is a choice, do you like freedom?

Anyone having an RPM drop in 5th ?

Driving on the highway down to AZ today, my truck would downshift from 6th at around 80 MPH when hitting a small hill. When it drops into 5th it starts around 2500 RPM, and it feels like it stalls and drops 400ish RPMs to 2100, no matter how much gas I give it. It finally has to drop to 4th when I floor it. It was driving me nuts.

It also hangs on 5th instead of dropping to 6th on flats around 80 MPH

Anecdotal evidence based on your experiences is great and valuable but it's also not scientific and then you say "don't give me that bro science..."?

No one that takes the time to understand what is involved with modifying the ECU calibration is under the impression that there is no risk to hardware when tuning.

I guess the R&D/M&P test engineer guys around here don't have a clue, though.

TC locking could be what your are describing.

When the torque converter "locks" it no longer allows any "slip" between the engine output and transmission input shaft. It allows for better efficiency (MPGs) but without any torque multiplication it will result in a lower engine RPM/power for the same vehicle speed when compared to an unlocked condition. So when the torque converter locks, engine RPM decreases a little bit and so does the amount of torque being delivered to the wheels. It can unlock when demand for more torque is made and the engine/transmission control (tune) is programmed to control the locking/unlocking behavior.

Here's a video that explains it pretty well - https://youtu.be/z5G2zQ_3xTc

I think there is more harm staying stock. Engine surging, hard shifts, gear hunting, etc. If anything there is higher chance Toyota might tell me "to take a flying leap" on a stock truck.

There is even guys here tuning trucks right at the dealership!

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Or that Toyota is doing the same via... wait for it... TSB PCM update. Maybe they should warn people with horrible shifting they won't honor the powertrain warranty if they flash the tsb.

@Tigris99 did you post the same on the Magnusson blower thread? Because those guys are really putting the AC60F through its paces; not people staying on relatively the same power output via a tune.

Here's some reading material for you: https://gearsmagazine.com/magazine/introducing-the-toyota-ac60e/

I think you might be the one being, “bro.” I’m still not 100% sure what that term means.

Forgive me if I don’t take your anecdotal evidence as gospel, but thanks for the heads up. When my transmission blows up I’ll be the first to let you know. You might be hearing from me in about 250k more miles, or in about 10-12years.
