Vagabond Drifter Camper Buildout and Mods

I've thinking about mounting my hi lift on the roof of the camper via my frontrunner rack, but then I saw this on YouTube and it looks like a good option too. Mounting up on the side. What do you'll think?

 

It’s nice and out of the way, but anything that heavy scares the ish out of me mounted that high, I’m sure there isn’t anything to worry about though.

 

Have any updates on your HiLift high mount, @joeydurango ? (since that's your video screenshot'd)

 

I feel the same way, something that heavy mounted that high is one concern, but I would be more worried about metal fatigue. You could make a plate that goes on the inside to spread out the load a little, but thats a lot of weight for a relatively thin piece of aluminum to support.

 

I would not put a hilift up there. Both weight and safety. If anything fails and you kill a person cause it came detached... better hope you got a good umbrella policy

 

I’d be afraid of it catching on a branch.

 

I offroad alot and go on alot of technical trails and never needed a hi lift. A good extended bottle jack can do 90% of the work that a hi lift can IMO. Why carry a clunky heavy item when you will use it once every 5 years..

 

You know I thought this too, until one day I was stuck in snow and didn't have recovery tracks on me, but had two straps and the hi lift. Winched my way out using the hi lift. Took about 1.5 hours but it got me out.

 

That definitely helps. I forgot about that one. I bring maxtrax with me when I go snow wheelin’.

 

A come along is lighter, safer and faster as a hand winch...

 

The high lift definitely brings the adrenaline when using it.. will it work will it fail.. guess we’ll see

 

will it latch up? maybe. pin clicking into the next hole is an entire other story

Is there any solution to bolt a HiLift jack underneath the vehicle for storage when not in use, for example, along side the frame where its out of the way ? Has anyone ever tried this ?

 

Im sure you could figure out something but you run the risk of getting stuck in the mud or sideways and blocking access to it when you need it most.

Not to mention the grime that will gum up the tool and make life difficult using it.

I would investigate other alternative first.

 

Anyone know which landing pad (base mount) is needed for a Yakima sky tower to L Track? I didn’t know there were so many...

2 QUESTIONS:

1. Does anyone have a picture of the grey powdercoat?
I have a grey toyota tundra and wondering if it would look good in the grey powdercoat or if I should stick with the black one



2. Do you guys recommend going with custom fab flat metal bedcaps to prevent leaks? or is just using a good gasket seal good enough at preventing leaks inside the bed?

 

Custom bedcaps aren't necessary, just make sure you seal underneath them properly
