Some mysteries, you'd just as soon not solve.... So, a year or two back (more or less; probably less than more), I re-sleeved the block in my little Super A that I'm rebuilding, and all the coolant promptly rushed from the water jacket to the oil pan. I diagnosed it as probably having rolled a liner seal when I installed one of the sleeves, so today's project was pulling them and seeing what the heck was going on.

My five minute rummage in the scrap pile sleeve puller:

Works like a charm, and would have taken a lot less time if I'd cut the Ready-Rod to an appropriate length, but I didn't see any point in wasting it... you never know when you might need a piece that long, right?

    Mystery solved...
I don't know how I did that; the sleeve bores really don't allow for it to go in so cocked it can hit the bottom sealing surface... I'm telling myself manufacturing defect, but either way, looks like I'm out a grand for a new set of liners, pistons, etc.

I need to rebuild a 140 and the engine has sleeves like this. I’ve been putting it off for fear of doing the same. Need to just do it.

There’s Shops that know how to do sleeves right & then there’s everybody else. Guys who showed me did lots of stationary variable pocket natural gas compressors. White Superiors, Waukeshaws & such. More to it than meets the eye. Rings had to be cut to Match. Quite a sight to see. Glad I was able to get taught.

    A thing or two...
Half way to NM. The new flight out was delayed 30-40 minutes. Luckily, I had a long layover on the original rebook this morning. Only another 15 minutes until boarding, then a 2 hr flight, about an hour for luggage and rental car, and an hour drive to my final destination. :bored:

And... I think we know what happened. As I was organizing everthing on the 'bench, I see one of the con-rods with a scratch line on it, right about where it would hit the skirt. I'm guessing when I was plasti-gauging the bottom ends, that one flopped over the crank and got brought up as I turned the engine.

Any thoughts on what the metal is? There's only a couple of critical dimensions, aside from the bore, and if something like BMS would do (which I could "liberate" from the material pile at club's workshop), it wouldn't be terribly challenging to turn a new one.

I don’t know what they are made of, I’m assuming something tough since they’re so thin and the rings run up and down them so much. I know they are lubed with oil to prevent the wear between the rings and liner but you also have to figure the heat they get too.

If it’s this one you can buy a single liner for $26

Whatever you do, make sure you freeze the new liner before installation so it goes in easy!

Random. My wife has flowers of each of these colors in the flower bed. They have mingled into one.
