After doing some circles and figure 8s in a gravel parking lot, it stopped. Tech said the degreased all the clutch plates and they needed to get reoiled to slip properly. Binding is all but gone. Sounds reasonable... I know if you don't put in lsd additive the same thing can happen. Clutch plates won't slip.

What clutch plates? 8.75" rear has none, and if it was filled properly, then there should be zero lubrication issue. The diff should not be binding at all.

Does anyone know who ECGS uses for the gears when you order the complete pig from them? I just swapped to 5.29 and I have actively been listening for the whine and so far I don't hear it at all.

That would be an ECGS question. They sell Nitro and Yukon, so one of those 2.

I would def question his clutch plate statement.

There are no clutch plates, what a load of crap. Sounds like the diff was not filled up.

Truck is back in the shop :fingerscrossed:

Hopefully it's an easy fix and no damages done.

Quick question. Towing my camper on the hwy I was in 4th at 2500 doing 60mph. Am I going to likely be in 5th at a lower rpm or in 4th at 3k now? o_O

I know overdrive is generally a no-no if towing any substantial weight, but does that still apply with being regeared?

So I jinxed myself it seems. I am nearing the end of the 500 mile break in period on my ECGS 5.29 pigs and now at 70mph on the gauge I hear a definite whine/howl sound. Very akin to loud tire noise but certainly sounds as if its coming from a different source than the tires, and only cropped up in the last couple highway trips I just took. Does anyone have any advice for this, I've done some reading on this thread, in fact, that says the fluid change will make a big difference? Otherwise what are some solutions? The foam behind the rear 'seats'? (I'm in a AC)

I'm curious if this would help with mine as well. Whine/howl at 70mph, gets MUCH quieter/gone as soon as I lift off the accelerator. ECGS normally recomends 85-140 but in talking with them where I'm in Maine and our cold winters they said I could go with a 80-90, but if it makes the howl go away or be much less of an issue I'll change to 85-140 when I do the first change.

The thicker stuff is good for the break in period and first 15k miles, but after that I think you'll be fine with the lower weight. I live in Colorado--have had the lower weight oil running in everything from 90+ degrees down to -15. I just finished up a road trip from Colorado to Tennessee and back. It's all been fine.

From what I have researched all the gears come out of the same factory in Korea and the USA distributors just put their branding on the boxes and ship them out.

After sending an email to Paul who I've been dealing with at ECGS they indeed suggested I change to 85-140 when I do the 500 mile change. ECGS has been great throughout this process.

Yes, I brought it back in and now all is well free of charge of course. The locker was partially engaged for some reason they reshimmed it and everything is good to go! Absolutely loving the 529s

So I changed my fluid to 85-140 per ECGS and I notice no discernable difference in my 70mph whine. I may have to try the foam behind the rear seat. Not sure how much that helps with a AC... Might just be something I'll need to learn to deal with

I got my truck re-geared with 4.88 Motive gears a few months back and had a slight whine for a while now. It does seem to be getting louder but ever so slightly as the miles roll on. I also noticed a womp, womp sound from 20 to 30 mph under light throttle. Is the noise in the video sound normal or is it the sound that some of the members here are experiencing in the higher speed ranges?

Everything about your issue, the shop's explanations, and the claimed fixes make zero sense. There are no clutches in the diff. There is no "shimming" of the locker. I'm glad it's working now, but the shop is feeding you bs or they're very ignorant.

I gotta say, I'm equally as ignorant.
Never been inside a Tacoma rear diff. Did some research though and I must agree, they simply came up with a story to cover a mistake.

Does anyone run 75-140 in a cold climate area? Wondering if it would help with whine. It's not terrible, but is noticable. Running 75-90 now after break in.

I can only reiterate what I posted a few pages back. After the first 15k on the gears in I moved to 75w-110 in the rear (from 80w-140) and it reduced the whine significantly.
