Anyone know why Toyota recommends tire rotations every 5,000 miles on our trucks? Most of the other cars I’ve had it’s every 10,000 miles when you change your oil.

Also, if you rotate your tires yourself do you have to use a TPMS reset tool to tell it which tire is which so the tire pressure reading on the dash matches the correct tire?

Does anyone have apart number or link to the reset tool and a procedure for you you actually do the reset?

No tool needed, you just use the reset button near the bottom of the dash.

Procedure is in your owners manual which is also available in digital format in the Toyota App. :D

If you look on the left side of the wheel by the dash at about knee level there’s a little button. Resets tpms to recognize new locations. I believe that’s all you need to do.

but... don't do the reset if you are doing a 5 tire rotation. The system (at least on a '16) can only store 4 IDs and will crash when a new ID is seen. Unfortunately, it's annoying to write sensor IDs to the correct location when you are rotating in a spare but can be done with TechStream

    Did this happen to you?

If the ECU only sees 4, how would it see a 5th that has not been uploaded?

I've stored the sensor IDs on my computer with their locations and I write/locate sensors via techstream

i saw your other post... I can say that I always rotate front right to spare but system will continue to read that tpms that is now in the spare location. ex I did a rotation but did not write new ID locations, when I aired down to 20 psi on all four corners, the TPMS system showed 20 psi on 3 corners, but 36psi on right front b/c I didn't air down the spare. when I got home I corrected laziness and rewrote the correct locations.
When I did this the first time I thought hitting the reset button would do this for me. It did nothing, so I tried holding the button in, which then crashed the TPMS system and I had to get a reader to read all the IDs in the sensors so I could reprogram the system.

    Awsome, thanks!

Kudos to Toyota for making this easy and not requiring a special tool to tell the car where each tire is when you rotate them!

6-8000 should be the standard rotation schedule. more if you have soft, or aggressive tread patterns. the autel 508 is a great tpms sensor programmer, and reset tool. i use it at least once every 4-6 months. Ski

I am asking about if you have the TMPS system "crash" when the 5th is "seen".

The above outlines what has occurred to me. by crashed... it wiped all sensor IDs and would not read any tires. the light flashed until i did the rewrite.

Yeah, it's total BS... My 2013 VW could manage rotating 5 tires no problem: 2017 Tacoma = no. I fully expected 4 years later; Toyota to catch up (Disappointment). FWIW: My fathers ~2020 VW even tells him the pressure of his spare

Any chance you can explain how you did that? Just rotated a spare in for the first time and crashed the TPMS system

I ran to a tire store and had them scan each sensor and I wrote down the ID and location. I keep those in my phone. Every time I rotate I rewrite the sensor location using techstream.

So you purchased a techstream tool? Is this the only way to do 51tire rotation and reset TPMS? Do you have a link of where you purchased the reset tool? I found this Autel MaxiTPMS tool on Amazon. Would this tool do the job? 225$ seems like a high price to pay.

That is what the TPMS button by your left shin does, read the owners manual section about it.
The truck sees 4 sensors in 4 locations and you rotate the same 4 the PCM still sees all of them. Pushing that button allows the truck to learn where the sensors are now.

But evident the TPMS is only for 4-tire rotations, not 5-tire rotations. Every time I’ve done my 5-tire rotation and used the reset button to have the system learn where the sensors are currently, the system fails and necessitates a trip to the dealer or tire store in order to reset the system.

Is a techstream tool the only way to recalibrate the system after doing a five tire rotation? If so, where could I purchase one for less than $200?

As many as I can fabricate
Tire rotation use to be closely associated with oil changes. Rotate your tires every other oil change. 3450 was our standard for oil at Firestone, so approx. 7000 on tires. Now its at least 10,000 on oil...lol. I would not do 20,000. My last set of tires went 94,000 with regular rotations and at least 2 alignments a year. If you like to buy tires let it ride. LMAO
